In a recent revelation, former Cup Series driver Matt DiBenedetto confirmed that he wasn’t retiring from racing as many rumors surrounding him suggested. Currently heading into 2024 without a team after quitting the Truck Series outfit Rackley W.A.R., the driver had announced through his social media account that he was working on obtaining sponsors who would aid him in getting back into a car in the coming season.

Regardless of the optimism with which DiBenedetto took the matter head-on, his potential comeback to the top tier of NASCAR might be a chaotic one considering that he was never a steady player there.

Matt DiBenedetto’s separation from Rackley W.A.R. was a surprising turn of events in the 2023 season. After spending two good seasons with the team, he announced last August that he would leave them at the end of the year. Following his announcement, the team withdrew him as their driver for the final three races of the year.

In his recent Instagram post, DiBenedetto revealed that he still did not have a solid plan as to whom he was going to drive for in 2024. Though this uncertainty leaves the door to a possible Cup Series return open, getting there might prove to be a bumpy road, for the last time he was there, he never stayed still.

Between 2015 and 2021, the 32-year-old driver raced in almost 250 Cup Series races for 4 different teams. He began his stint with the now-defunct BK Racing and moved to Go Fas Racing, and then, Leavine Family Racing, before ending his run at Wood Brothers Racing. Three of the four teams that he raced for aren’t functioning now. During his stint in the Cup Series, his never-give-up attitude won him the praises of many. And yet, he couldn’t garner a single victory lane visit throughout his time there.

Wanting to prove himself, he made the decision to take a couple of steps back and moved to the Truck Series as a result. His two years with Rackley W.A.R. did exactly what he had wanted it to. Winning in Talladega in his first year and making it to the playoffs in his second, he appears almost set for a comeback to the top tier again if he finds a sponsor and a ride.

The one impending question about Matt DiBenedetto leaving Rackley W.A.R. was, “Why now?” The team is on its rise and could potentially challenge for the title in the coming years. Though the driver nor the team have provided a solid answer to that question, the former did clear the air on why it was taking so long for him to provide updates on what he is up to in the offseason.

Addressing the concerns on his social media handle, he said, “It takes money to go racing, so we’re just trying to send up some sponsorship and figuring out the details for next year. There are a couple of opportunities on that route there, but just building a step at a time…The short answer is we are working on sponsors.”

At the time of his initial announcement of leaving Rackley W.A.R., DiBenedetto said that he was “exploring all options in all series.” The chess pieces have been moving around even before since the season came to an end across all three series. Many seats are yet to be confirmed in Xfinity and Cup, so there wouldn’t be a lack of choices for the driver. Should be successful in his mission of finding a sponsor, he could find a way up the ladder once again.
