Sports documentaries serve the significant purpose of raising awareness and extending the sport’s outreach to a wider fanbase. Moreover, these films offer a glimpse into off-track friendships and rivalries, providing viewers with a more comprehensive understanding of the sports world. A case in point is Drive to Survive, which effectively utilized the streaming platform Netflix. The result was a swift success and a notable surge in fans joining the grid.

In contrast, NASCAR took a different approach by airing its docu-series on the USA Network but it couldn’t the expected results. However, according to revelations by Sports Business Journal‘s Adam Stern, a potential game-changing move for NASCAR is on the horizon. This upcoming development can potentially reshape the sport’s trajectory and influence its future direction.

NASCAR has a history of partnering with Netflix, which boasts more than 200 million subscribers. Notably, a documentary series spotlighting Bubba Wallace, titled Race: Bubba Wallace, garnered significant attention and even clinched a Sports Emmy award earlier this year.

Additionally, NASCAR aired Race For The Championship on USA Network, a comprehensive series covering the entire 2022 season. Although it evoked mixed reactions, the series—a production associated with Dale Earnhardt Jr—managed to amass an overall rating of 8.3 on IMDB. However, it received comparatively restrained attention from fans across the globe. Hence, NASCAR planned to defer streaming the complete series until 2023, focusing instead on a playoff-exclusive approach.

With only two weeks remaining until the onset of the playoffs, NASCAR’s governing body is yet to furnish a conclusive confirmation concerning the series spanning the upcoming 10-week-long playoffs. Sources say that it’s because the sanctioning body is trying to finalize plans to air the series on the platform that finally boosted F1 to stardom in the US after decades of trying.

Adam Stern shared a tweet recently that ignited a wave of anticipation among fans. The tweet spurred a flurry of hope and well-wishes, with fans expressing their aspiration that should this scenario materialize, it could be a major success for the sport.

The 75th season has proven to be a resounding triumph for the sport as a whole. Notable achievements, including the revival of the North Wilkesboro race track, the inaugural Chicago Street race, and successful undertakings like Project 91 and Garage 56,  played a pivotal role in luring back NASCAR’s declining viewership.

Fans are now eager for another bold move by NASCAR, urging the organization to air a documentary series on Netflix. This move is anticipated to generate a massive spike, enabling NASCAR to connect with a larger audience. Most of the comments suggest this would be a big win for the sport.

One fan expected the series to be a, “FIRE MOVE.”

Another enthusiastic fan exclaimed, “This alone will make the playoffs more exciting and bring more viewers.”

“I hate to say it but NASCAR has been on a absolute roll with a lot of great decisions back to back.”

“God I hope this works out. Idc if it gets dramatisized liked Drive to survive. NASCAR desperately needs this type of attention.”

A Bubba Wallace fan wished, “Really, really want / need Bubba to make the playoffs then.”

Comparing it favorably to the Formula One series, a few fans enthusiastically commented, “Drive To Survive, but real” and “Finally, an actual competitive form of Motorsport on Netflix.”
