The race took place on August 20, and while Truex Jr. finished 18th, it was a significant step in his racing career. On August 13, 2017, Truex Jr. won momentously at Michigan International Speedway. Representing Furniture Row Racing and driving the #78 Toyota, he not only led 57 laps but also secured a dominant win, solidifying his position as a force to be reckoned with on this track.
However, since 2018, the veteran driver has only been able to claim the top 5 spots twice in 2019 and 2020 when he raced with FRR (Furniture Row Racing), which competed in the NASCAR Cup Series from 2005 to 2018—in comparison, clinching the bare minimum in 2021 and 2022 by being in the top 10, which is where he raced for JGR.
