Martin Truex Jr. should’ve taken the advice of Sean Parker from The Social Network for his ‘statement’ on his future. “Drop the ‘the’,” Parker tells a pre-Facebook-pre-Meta Mark Zuckerberg, “It’s cleaner”. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver recently released a statement on his own future amidst the uncertainty surrounding his continuity in the sport. And the veteran driver chose to take the cool road.

“I’m coming back,” is what Truex Jr. had to say about his future plans, something his team put up in a press release.

But this ‘statement’, as cool as it is, won’t be held to the NASCAR driver’s name, no. Because this statement was made many, many years ago by arguably the greatest athlete of all time, Michael Jordan.

Jordan had announced his comeback to the NBA in a similar fashion in 1995, although with fewer words.

“I’m back,” was what the 23XI Racing co-owner had to say.

And right, the “coming” part of Truex’s statement was perhaps a matter of tenses and grammar concerns, yet still, he can take up Parker’s advice for whenever he does decide to come back to the sport after his ‘retirement.’

Martin Truex Jr. had hinted at retirement earlier

In an interview a few weeks ago, the veteran driver did talk about how he didn’t want to do anything half-heartedly. But more notable of his comments were about him looking back on his career.

“This sport is not easy. It’s very hard, it takes a lot of effort it takes a lot of commitment. And I’ve never been one in my life to do anything half and half and if I’m gonna sign the paper and say, ‘I’m gonna race again next year,’ I wanna make sure that I’m 100% committed,” he said.

“Because as I told you, 95% doesn’t get anything done.”

Truex Jr. had added that he was “close” to deciding what he’s gonna do next year.
