Upsetting the regular NASCAR playoff plot, AJ Allmendinger emerged as the first non-playoff driver to conquer this season’s series. Leading twice and for a whopping 46 laps, Allmendinger showcased his road course mastery, holding off challenges from the likes of William Byron to clinch the win by 0.666 seconds.
But the statistics only tell half the story. Who knew the most challenging part of the race was the emotional turmoil inside the car? Wallace probed, asking AJ Allmendinger the reason for the heightened emotions this time around, given that he’s seen many victories in his racing career.
AJ Allmendinger responded, “Well, I mean, it’s a cup win. First of all, you know it’s so hard to get an opportunity to win a cup race, you know, especially where we’re at as an organization. We’re trying to grow.
“Sitting at home at times, maybe in tears because I’m down like man, I’m letting everybody down.” Allmendinger went deeper, sharing the moments of doubt, the times he felt he was in a rut, and the overwhelming sense of responsibility he felt towards his team.”

Kenny, deeply moved by AJ’s openness, empathized with his sentiments. “Sometimes when I do Kenny conversations, I totally understand what you’re saying,” Kenny remarked. Echoing the sentiments of many, he recognized the suppressed emotions and passion that burst forth upon victory. After all, in a world of roaring engines and burning rubber, feelings often take a back seat.
He further added, “I know too much, and I can get distracted when I’m doing these conversations. I totally understand what you’re saying. So what you’re saying is that we have things bottled up inside of us, and when we win the race, we don’t realize it.
“And we just like Jesus, why am I crying you know oh I get it I wanted it so bad that I suppressed it inside me.”
