A heartwarming tribute by Chase Elliott for his legendary father
Bill Elliott has undeniably emerged as an iconic figure in NASCAR. With 44 wins and the 1988 Winston Cup championship, he has etched his name into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Bill also bagged NASCAR’s Most Popular Driver of the Year award a staggering 16 times, which has been the highest number of wins by a driver so far.
Chase has rightfully followed in his father’s footsteps and is already on a streak of five successive seasons of winning the prize. Chase Elliott watched his dad win four races from 2001 to 2003 in a similarly painted No.9 Dodge. What makes the paint scheme more significant is the fact that the Hendrick Motorsports driver has admitted how that particular phase of his dad’s career inspired him to take up racing professionally.
To pay tribute to the career of a well-deserved champion and a great father, Chase replicated the No.9 Dodge’s paint scheme at Darlington earlier this year in May. While a win eluded him on the day, the respect was great.

Looking at how Chase has gone about his career as a race car driver and a personality, one could draw similarities between him and his father. When asked about the importance of the Darlington tribute, the 27-year-old said, “This one means a lot.”
“Those years were extremely crucial, not only for the number, but I’m not even sure I would have found racing had those years not been going on. If I wasn’t exposed then, I don’t know that I’d find it. Those years impacted me heavily and certainly sparked my interest to want to try to do it.”
