From Cup Series cars to midgets, Kyle Larson has been flawlessly taming a variety of machines throughout his illustrious racing career. After an all-time low in 2020, Yung Money bounced back with a Cup Series championship win. Accumulating numerous awards and accolades throughout the various racing series he competes in, Kyle Larson was inducted into NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers list in 2023.

Known for his ability to quickly adapt to the various forms of racing, for the first time ever, Kyle Larson’s faith in his racing prowess seems to be wavering.

Nominated in 2022 by ESPN for the ESPYS Best Driver Award, Larson went on to win the coveted honor. Come 2023, the Hendrick Motorsport star would once again find his name on the ESPYS Best Driver Award nominations list. Not enjoying a great Cup season so far, Kyle Larson had his reservations regarding the nominations. Having said earlier that there were drivers who were more deserving of the nominations, the HMS #5 driver revealed who he thinks would be the right choice for the coveted honor.

During the pre-race presser at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, media personnel questioned the 2021 Cup Series champion, asking, “Talking about the list of drivers that you’re nominated along with – you are nominated in good company along with Brittany Force, Josef Newgarden and Max Verstappen. What are your thoughts on being nominated for this award with those drivers?”

Kyle Larson answered, “Yeah, they’re the best – or one of the best – in all of their forms of racing. Anytime you can join a list with names like that is special.”

Revealing which driver according to him deserved the nominations, Larson added, “But again, I think a guy like Joey Logano probably should be on it more so than me. But hey – if I win, I’m going to stick the trophy right next to the other one, too. It’s cool…it’s cool, for sure. But a fluke, in a way.”

While the HMS star believes Joey Logano may be the perfect candidate owing to his racing finesse, the Team Penske driver on the other hand would beg to differ.

Namedropped by Kyle Larson as the right fit for the best driver, the 2018 and 2022 Cup Series champion’s words pointed the other way. Speaking to the media in Atlanta, Joey Logano dropped a cryptic six-word message. When asked about which teams could put up a tough playoff fight, Logano casually hinted how he is no more a part of the top-performing drivers.

Struggling to regain his championship pace this season, Logano said, “I’d say if anything it’s easier this year to tell who is gonna be the hitters right now, and a lot of it is the same guys it’s always been. You go back and look at it and the best teams, the best drivers are usually up front.”
