In 2018, an incident occurred at Watkins Glen International during a NASCAR race between Bubba Wallace and Kyle Busch. At that time, Busch, who was driving for Joe Gibbs Racing, reportedly mentioned a so-called “Mark Martin rule” to Wallace. In case you are wondering what the Mark Martin rule is, Busch described it to Wallace as, “When I catch you, layover.”
Soon after hearing this, Wallace made it clear that he was not willing to engage in such a racing style.
Fast forward to a month after Bubba Wallace talked about this, Busch appeared to suggest that he had deliberately avoided causing a collision with Wallace at the recent Talladega race.
Kyle Busch hints about avoiding wrecking Bubba Wallace
Busch was asked if he considered the “Blaney-Wallace portion” of that luck or if he expected that at the end of a race. To this, Busch responded, “Well, so Bubba was pushing me on the restart. He had me squirreled up a little bit down the backstretch. And then we got separated from each other. He went back to grab whoever was behind him, brought the momentum back forward. I got out a little too far.”
“Off of four, Bubba was coming with a head of steam. I could have turned up to get in front of him and tried to block. I’m going to get wrecked. My stuff would not take pushes anyways. I was not going to put myself in a spot where I was going to try to take one.”
“I just let those guys go by and say we’ll sort it out down the backstretch and see what happens. We have four more corners to see what happens in this race, two and a half more miles. They got to pushing real hard, and Bubba went to block. You can’t make more than one turn being pushed. By the time you make that second one, you’re wrecked,” he concluded.

It had been 15 years since Busch had been able to win at Talladega. During Sunday’s race, Busch found himself suddenly leading the race to grab the chequer, marking his 62nd win in his career. With barely enough fuel in the tank, Rowdy went ahead and got himself that long-deserved victory.
Earlier into the race, no one could have anticipated Busch to win at Talladega. This was not until Bubba Wallace was wrecked out of the race on the final lap. Wallace had been trying to defend his lead from Ryan Blaney. However, things did not end up well, after a brief contact saw him spinning out. Soon after, the 23XI Racing driver wrecked out, collecting several other drivers along the way.
