Yet again Ryan Newman fell short of winning on the 0.75-mile asphalt of Richmond. The veteran NASCAR driver who debuted in the Modified Tour at Richmond in 2021 has been elusive of a victory since then. Although there were probabilities of him ending his winless streak after leading the race for a brief period, his fate had other plans in store.
Despite his disappointment for the fourth year in a row, Ryan Newman is more than elated to be a part of the Whelen Modified Tour, and this is apparent from his post-race interview with veteran journalist Matt Weaver.

Before NASCAR’s national series hits the track of the D-shaped short track of Richmond, the paved asphalt played host to the two rounds of the Whelen Modified Tour. Moreover, the roster included the names of celebrated NASCAR Cup Series veterans like Bobby Labonte and Ryan Newman.

Nevertheless, the race bore witness to neck-to-neck contention between Justin Bonsignore and Ron Silk, which finally concluded with Bonsignore claiming the win. While Bonsignore and Silk jockeyed for the lead, Newman seemed to have been struggling with his car. Despite taking the lead and restarting third, the Daytona 500 winner was unable to maintain his momentum and finished eleventh in the race.
However, the veteran NASCAR driver was far from feeling heartbroken. Speaking to Matt Weaver in the post-race interview, Newman revealed his affinity towards Modified Tours, “Well you said it, it’s the cars. It’s the length of the race, the simplicity of all of it. Less politics, less B.S., that’s short-track racing. The car is so much fun to drive..” After his outing in Richmond, Ryan Newman is set to strap himself for the SMART Modified Tour.
Stating his elation for the next race, the driver stated, “That’s four or five hours away, we will see. I think I look forward to it, I have never been there before, heard it is a fast track hopefully it would be a lot of fun.” For the SMART Modified Tour, after his part-time role, Newman is set to make his full-time entry into the series. He is set to pilot the #2 Mod for Coulter Motorsports owned by Randy Renfrow. The team has been the runner-up for two consecutive years.

While Newman may have been met with dejection for another year and failed to notch a victory, Justin Bonsignore, the 3x Whelen Modified Tour champion added another victory to his hat after surpassing his rival Ron Silk.
With the jubilation apparent on his face, Bonsignore in his post-race interview stated, “This gives a little look behind our team. This is tough. [Crew chief] Ryan Stone is the only paid, full-time employee on our team; everybody else is a volunteer. Sometimes it’s too much. We got home from [the season-opener at Florida’s New Smyrna Speedway], and we were having some really tough conversations of where we were going to go in the future with things.”

Moreover, Bonsignore also fell victim to Newman’s aggression and as a result lost a handful of laps in the race. However, Bonsignore shrugged his shoulder at the incident and stated, “That’s why he’s a NASCAR legend.” While the Whelen Modified proved to be a disappointing affair for Ryan Newman, it will be interesting to see what the SMART Modified Tour has in store for the Cup Series veteran.
