The NASCAR Cup Series heads to Richmond Raceway for the Cook Out 400, the final short-track showdown of the regular season. With only five races left to decide the 16-driver Playoff field, the stage is set for some Sunday afternoon side-by-side action on the iconic D-shaped oval.
As the dust settles and the countdown to the playoffs commences, the spotlight falls on the short tracks. Six short tracks tested the drivers’ skills this season, and two organizations stood tall. With wins at Martinsville, Phoenix, and Richmond for Joe Gibbs Racing and clinching victories at Bristol Dirt, Dover, and New Hampshire, Hendrick Motorsports has left their rivals in their tracks. But we have a Richard Childress Racing driver emerging as a dark horse in this.

Richmond Raceway, formerly known as the Atlantic Rural Exposition Fairgrounds, holds a rich history dating back to 1946, when it hosted its first race as a half-mile dirt track. As the drivers gear up for the short track showdown at Richmond, three names stand out as the ones to watch: Kyle Busch, Chase Elliott, and Alex Bowman. These talented racers have showcased their prowess on short tracks throughout the season, making them serious contenders for the Cookout 400.
During an interview with NBC Motorsports, NASCAR analyst and veteran Dale Jarrett stated, “There’s just one driver that you have to always look at when you go there, even though maybe not recently as much, and we’ll see what happens. But Kyle Bush’s record at this racetrack is just phenomenal. The way that he’s gone about this and his 35 starts, I mean it’s just incredible how he finishes these races.”
“I think he has six wins in the Cup Series there. It’s just amazing to watch him maneuver here. So, you know, can he get up and and be a part not just the Hendrick cars, but he can do that. The other driver at Chevrolet that you have to look at, but probably 2. But Chase hasn’t won here yet. But he runs well. But Alex Bowman does have a win here, and that’s what it’s going to take for him to get in the playoffs.”
Among the active drivers, Kyle Busch shines as the short-track maestro, boasting six impressive victories in short-track races. His victories at Richmond Raceway in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and the 2018 sweep cement his reputation as a force to be reckoned with. As the current favourite, Busch aims to add another win to his illustrious short track record and secure his spot in the Playoffs.
