Legacy Motor Club is about to usher a new era going into the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series. At least that was the message put out by the team co-owner and Hall of Famer, Jimmie Johnson. Formerly known as Petty GMS Motorsports, the team took major steps in rebranding not only the team but its vision going forward in NASCAR. With Johnson hoping in as the co-owner alongside Maury Gallagher and Richard Petty, LMC made a huge call by announcing a change in their manufacturer from Chevrolet to Toyota.
Legacy Motor Club under Jimmie Johnson is hoping to scale new heights in NASCAR and therefore has made the necessary changes. And guess what, manufacturer change was just the beginning. Cal Wells was appointed as the CEO, Bill Scott was promoted to COO, and former NASCAR driver, Matt Kenseth was roped in as the team’s competition advisor. Adding to the list were the sponsors that were going to support the team’s vision. Johnson, while announcing his schedule, expressed his optimism for the team going into the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series.

It has to be noted, that only two teams in the Cup Series were under the Toyota banner – Joe Gibbs Racing and 23XI. With John Hunter Nemechek (No.42) and Erik Jones (No.43) leading the charge with full-time schedules in the new Toyota Camry XSE, co-owner Johnson will also be back running in a total of nine races starting with the season’s opener at Daytona.
While speaking on NBS’s TV show Today, the 48-year-old hinted about the new era of Legacy Motor Club along with hope and optimism for the 2024 season. Johnson said, “Yeah, it’s been a very busy off-season but this morning we’ve announced Carvana coming back to sponsor me for the handful of races starting with the Daytona 500. So very excited about that.
“In addition to that great news, we just announced a new partnership with Family Dollar and Dollar Tree and with that, we have AdventHealth, our partnership with Toyota. So Legacy Motor Club has a lot going on. We’re growing quickly and certainly hope to be a force within the NASCAR industry.”
The debut season of LMC did not go as planned and to say the least, they would want to forget their points standings after the final race. However, with multiple changes across the board, from new manufacturers to a new driver and sponsors, the team is headed in the right direction.

If you remember LMC’s CEO Cal Wells’ interview from last year where he stressed making the team more competitive. One of the arguments he made was that Chevy was not allocating the necessary and adequate resources for the team’s progress. He went on to state that Chevrolet did not see LMC as a top-tier team and this was the breaking point of the partnership between the two.
The biggest winner amongst this was Toyota who added a new team who’s under the able hands and leadership of Jimmie Johnson. This move also made sense for LMC as the Japanese giant only had two teams under its umbrella. Adding the icing on the cake, Toyota announced their new Camry XSE which is touted to be much faster, while Chevrolet on the other hand, had no plans to roll out a new machine. Johnson and the LMC team have sure played their cards right with the partnership with Toyota and who knows they might have initiated a new trend in NASCAR.
