Change is the only constant, especially in the fast-track world of NASCAR. The 2023 Cup Series season paved the way for a plethora of changes. While some of them left the racing community stupefied, others were accepted with open arms. One such change that left the fandom searching for answers was Jimmie Jhonson’s announcement of joining Toyota for the 2024 season and severing his ties with the Golden Bowtie organization.
As a driver, Jimmie Johnson had reached the pinnacle of racing, thanks to his allegiance to Hendrick Motorsports and their winningest manufacturer Chevrolet. However, transitioning from his driver role to that of a co-owner, the priorities have changed for the 7x Cup Series champion. As a result, the drastic decision to change allegiance, but is the new change paying off any dividends? Well, the Hall of Famer seems to accept so.

There is no denying the fact that it is Hendrick Motorsports that sits atop the pecking order of Chevrolet, and who enjoys the lion’s share of when it comes to success. While other Chevrolet teams seemed to have come to terms with the invincible presence of Rick Hendrick and his eponymous team in the manufacturer’s shop, Jimmie Johnson seemed to differ as a co-owner of Legacy Motor Club as they strived for success.
This was reinforced when the CEO of LMC asserted that they had limited access to any insider information and were treated like a tier-three team. Perhaps this is what led to the decision to change their manufacturing partner from the 2024 season. However, the question at this juncture that Johnson has to answer, is whether the team is yielding any positive results from the change. Speaking on it, the Hall of Famer expressed:
“I don’t have an apples-to-apples comparison as the team was evolving, but certainly from March of last year to March of this year to see the growth of our team it’s quite impressive at the start of the race in Phoenix. We had a car capable of winning the race. Erik was up there battling hard for the lead. We still have some things to iron out. We are a young team in a lot of ways and the consistency that the big organizations have with the speed of their car with the performance on the pit lane.”
While the team owner is excited about the prospects Toyota brings, there’s a lot more that has got Johnson up on his feet. Recently, Jimmie Johnson was bestowed with another Hall of Fame induction.
