Despite being demoted from the Cup Series, Tony Stewart‘s pride really shook up the world, edging out the championship contenders in the final restart to pick up his first Xfinity Series title on Saturday, proving that he is more than just a 25-year-old born with a silver spoon.
Not only did Cole Custer hold off the JRM’s Justin Allgaier and JGR’s John Hunter Nemechek in the final restart, bringing back the Ford camp to its glory but he also showcased superior race craft, putting on a clinical performance in the closing laps – one that even earned him Stewart’s praise – “I’m super proud of you.”
Reflecting on his #00 driver’s title win, veteran Stewart put out a piece of advice for the young wave of drivers, mentioning Friday’s chaotic Truck Series race that went into triple overtime before the last caution drove the race into a 4th one. In the post-race interview on the victory lane, the 3-time Cup Series champion took a sharp dig, urging the truckers to learn a thing or two from his driver’s performance.

Tony Stewart tears down truckers after Friday’s haywire Truck Series race
Calling Friday’s Truck Series dramatic would be more of an understatement. The race had multiple cautions with drivers getting in each other faces with utter disregard. In short, the race was infamous being one of the worst wrecked-filled races of recent times. Prominent NASCAR driver including Martin Truex Jr, Denny Hamlin, and Kyle Busch shared their disappointment in seeing NASCAR’s third-tier promotion becoming an embarrassment.
Truex Jr according to ESPN said, “I was not impressed, that is not professional auto racing. It’s a joke, they need to fix it.” Consequently, Stewart upped the ante, ripping Truck Series drivers into shreds after his driver won the Xfinity Series title. Unlike Friday’s race, Custer‘s triumph was simply a clinic for aspiring drivers to learn how to win without causing carnage, beating, and banging on each other.
Stewart said, “I think that his level of maturity and especially on that last restart to hit the outside and to get the #7 car on the outside of him, cars on the inside and the chaos in 1 & 2 but it’s actually nice, maybe the Truck Series drivers will pay attention and learn something from tonight and you don’t have to destroy each other to win races and championships.”

In a time of absolute misery, Cole Custer made the team proud, racking up his first Xfinity title on Saturday. Not only did the 25-year-old prove critics wrong, but he also broke the team’s awful streak by gifting them a NASCAR title last won by Kevin Harvick in the Cup Series in 2014.
With his driver shattering all expectations and carrying the team on his capable shoulders, Stewart did not mince his words as he showered praise on the #00 driver. He said, “I’m super proud of Cole (Custer). He literally won that one on his own, I watched the replay 4 times and I still don’t know what he exactly did but what he did was perfect. I mean, it didn’t look good going into 1 but coming off 2, whatever, he did in the center. 1 and 2 was perfect and then finished it off in 3 and 4. So really proud of this Haas Automation team and Cole.”

Mentioning the #00’s crew chief, Jonathan Toney and the chemistry between him and Custer, Stewart further added, saying, “
JT, they did an awesome job, I mean this is a group of guys, they don’t have any quit in them. Hasn’t been a perfect season but in the end when it counted they did their job and their work, and Cole drove his a** off tonight.”ADVERTISEMENT
