Larry McReynolds is a name that is synonymous with success in the world of NASCAR. With a career spanning more than three decades, McReynolds has established himself as one of the most accomplished and respected crew chiefs in the sport’s history. He has led some of the biggest names in NASCAR to victory lane, including the legendary Dale Earnhardt and the talented Davey Allison. However, recently during a podcast, McReynolds revealed who he thought was the greatest driver ever to grip a steering wheel on short tracks. What is interesting is that the man he named was not Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott, or Dale Earnhardt Sr. In fact, it was someone else entirely.

During the interview with Mike Wallace, McReynolds mentioned, “I tell ya we had it going on. We didn’t run very many races from May to July, because it was a short time. But everywhere we went, Butch was so bad fast. I mean Butch literally was the best short-track racing driver to ever grip a steering wheel of a race car.”

Following his crew chief days, McReynolds now mostly actively works with Fox as an analyst in the broadcast booth. However, that does not mean he has quit his crew chief dreams. Just last year, he partnered with Jeffrey Earnhardt for the 2022 season Talladega Xfinity race. Though it was more of a one-off event than anything permanent. That event also marked more than two decades since he had been a crew chief for someone.
