On the biggest night of 2022 in the NASCAR circuit, there was only one worthy winner – Joey Logano. But for Chase Elliott, there was hope that he might just pip Logano for the title. Unfortunately, the #9 Chevrolet couldn’t conjure up magic and settled for a 2nd place in the Championship.

The Championship 4 race started on a very somber note in Phoenix on Sunday. A tragic turn of events took place off track, as it was announced that Ty Gibbs’ father, Coy Gibbs, had passed away.
Going on to the race, Logano was impressive. Having won the pole position in qualifying, Logano was an obvious favorite to win the race and get his second Championship, after his first one in 2018.
Chase Elliott was another strong title contender. The 26-year-old had a great 2022 and was strongly favored to win. However, Elliott spun out of the race with 113 laps to go. Coming around the dogleg after the start line, he touched the nose of Ross Chastain’s car. Before the spin he was within the top 10 but after the incident, he was more or less out of contention for the race.
“I felt like we just kind of peaked right there before we crashed. And I felt like we got our car driving pretty good, we just had our best pit stop of the day, so that was all really solid. And heck, we were right there next to the [No.] 22. I thought we had a shot at it all the way up until we didn’t, and that’s, unfortunately, the way it goes sometimes,” said Elliott.
A disappointing night for Chase Elliott, a great one for Logano, and a saddening one for Ty Gibbs and the entire NASCAR community to lose a man like Coy Gibbs.
Fans take exception to Chase Elliott’s comments
After the race, the drivers got down to their media duties and Elliott was asked about the incident with Chastain that led to him spinning out of the championship contention.

But the way Chase avoided the question has fans really upset and annoyed.
Chase Elliott's refusal to talk about any on-track incident is really, really lame.
It's his right but the people want to hear from you.

At least own your mistake. 🙄

Crybaby Chase didn't get his way. Didn't even want to comment on the incident because he knows it was his fault for blocking a car that was already to his corner panel. Can't expect another championship rival to back out in the final race. 😭😭😭

There are always going to be two sides to the debate as to whose mistake it was. But at the end of the day, neither ended up winning and Logano made the most of it for sure.
