Todd Gilliland‘s journey in the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. From being a full-time driver to experiencing the uncertainty of not holding that title, he has now reclaimed his status as a full-time driver once more. The 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season underwent a significant shift in March, officially extending to 34 races at that point.

Yet, despite his resilience and determination, the Front Row Motorsports driver has encountered a mixed bag of results on the track this season. Beyond the three races of the regular season where he showcased his skill with top-10 finishes, his performance has faltered. Regrettably, he hasn’t managed to secure a finish better than P11. And now, as we approach the end of the 2023 Cup season, Todd Gilliland finds himself just three races away from joining an exclusive roster that boasts luminaries like Kyle Petty and Kenny Wallace.

In the latest installment of Todd Gilliland’s high-speed journey, he wrapped up the Las Vegas NASCAR Cup Series race with a 27th-place finish. The day was fraught with handling challenges from the outset, yet the 23-year-old’s indomitable spirit propelled him into the top 5 following a pivotal pit stop. Though Todd found himself a lap down, he battled valiantly until a fortuitous caution involving Erik Jones allowed him to wave around and rejoin the lead lap. The first stage concluded with him in 31st place.

As stage two commenced, Tom Gilliland, armed with fresh tires and a full tank of fuel, demonstrated marked improvement over the preceding stage, consistently competing within the top 25. He concluded stage two in P26, ultimately concluding the race in a disheartening P27. And as if that wasn’t enough, now a notable statistic has loomed over Todd Gilliland throughout the 2023 Cup Series, a statistic he is determined to overcome?he has yet to lead a single lap.

The eye-catching statistic recently emerged on NASCAR’s Reddit platform, cataloging drivers from the past three decades who participated in every race but failed to seize a single lap in the lead. This list included illustrious names like Kenny Wallace and Kyle Petty, as well as Hendrick Motorsports star Alex Bowman. With only three races remaining in the season, Todd Gilliland is on the brink of joining this unique roster.

Gilliland shared the Reddit post on his Twitter account with a one-word caption: “L,” which perhaps means Loser. However, NASCAR fans would definitely hope Todd meant L as a Learner rather than a ‘loser.’

Notably, despite these statistics, Gilliland’s sponsors and his dedicated team remain unwavering in their support. A testament to this unwavering commitment is Serial 1 Premium E-Bikes’ return as a partner for the accomplished sophomore driver, Todd Gilliland, and the No. 38 Ford Mustang team.

But talking about lap-leading, today, leading laps has become a mere footnote in the racing narrative. And it all started when NASCAR stopped handing out points for the same. Hopefully, with a fresh paint scheme adorning his car, Gilliland might be determined to avoid joining the ranks of drivers who have failed to lead a single lap throughout an entire season.
