Just a day earlier, Kyle Weatherman decided to take himself out of the Xfinity run in Darlington. The news sent shock waves across the NASCAR community. Needless to say, it was a hard blow for his team, DGM Racing. Notably, Weatherman’s mother-in-law is suffering from breast cancer, and the situation is quite critical right now. The carcinogens have spread to her bones as well as her brain. The doctors broke the hard news to Weatherman’s wife, Meg, that her mother was not going to make it.
Despite such a situation in the family, Weatherman came back to race at Darlington and finished in P17. It was not a bad run for him! Additionally, he dedicated the race to his mother-in-law, Barbara, who has become a racing enthusiast over the last few years.
“She said go racing, so that’s what we did,” mentioned Weatherman on his return to Darlington

After the race at Darlington, Kyle Weatherman opened up to Frontstretch about how hard it is to flip the mental switch before and after the race due to a family emergency. He expressed that it was difficult; he had spoken to her over the radio as they approached the start and found himself getting emotional. Later, the DGM Racing driver again shared a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), stating how scared they were due to a worsening situation, but it seemed like they got lucky. God blessed Barbara with a few more days to live!
Weatherman told Frontstretch, “This morning she was good, and she said go racing so that’s what we did. So, she’s just a huge supporter of mine. Two years ago, she knew nothing about racing, neither did my wife Meg. And now, they’re huge race (enthusiasts), we were watching the truck race last night. There’s a million other channels, we were in the hospital watching the truck race last night. So she loves listening to the radio on the NASCAR app scanner and watching the race. So, got a sticker on the car for her.”
FAMILY FIRST ALWAYS!!
Leaving the hospital now and kissed both of them.
THANK YOU JESUS Barbara is stable and ok yesterday and this morning 🙏🏻

He further added, “I’ve been a baby all week. I’ve been crying like a baby. I just love her right! So, you know, for her to be going through what she’s going through, it’s just tough to see… This race was for her and she was riding with me all day long. So it was a hard fought race, we didn’t have the perfect race car, but we came here, had fun and fought for it. And that’s what she did and is still doing now. So, love her, excited to get back to her and we’ll go on to Charlotte in a few weeks.”
He acknowledged that the emotions persisted even when he was strapped in and ready to race. However, once the race began and the green flag was waved, the #91 became intensely focused. For a moment, his conscience felt clear, which was a relief after the long and challenging week they had endured due to her fight.

DGM Racing actively supported Kyle Weatherman’s choice to put family first over racing. They put out an empathetic social media message, “Some Things Are Bigger Than Racecars.” They promptly announced the logistical adjustments, including backup Kaden Honeycutt stepping in to take the place, during the practice and qualifying sessions.
This action by DGM Racing displays a deeply ingrained value in NASCAR culture that prioritizes the welfare of team members and their families over the constant chase for wins.
The effort of Honeycutt and his team was well appreciated by Weatherman. He thanked the young driver for getting ready at such short notice. “I took yesterday off and thanks to Kaden Honeycutt you know kind of stepping up and being there. If you know, we had practice in qualifying, but at the end of the day yeah, family comes first.”
Kyle Weatherman deeply cherished the close bond his wife Mag shared with her mother. He noted that Mag constantly communicates with her mother, calling and texting throughout the day. The 26-year-old further requested prayers during this difficult time. His bond with Barbara is adorable, too. It is evident from Weatherman putting the sticker “Barbara Brooks” on the back of his car before the race.
We earnestly wish for her recovery and hope she returns home in the best health imaginable. It is also a request from our end to pray for her health.
