The fight between Richard Childress Racing’s Kyle Busch and his former team Joe Gibbs Racing competing for a win was surely one of the main attractions on Sunday at Sonoma Raceway, where the two Cup Series champions fought tooth-and-nail, in order to take the chequered flag and add another victory to their impressive resumes.
While Kyle Busch tried his best to secure his fourth win of the season and maintain his winning streak, it was Joe Gibbs Racing’s Martin Truex Jr who proved that he was the ‘Best Man’ to win on Sunday, clinching his fourth win on the track. He now just falls one short to tie with Jeff Gordon, who has five wins at the track of Sonoma.
Nevertheless, the grit that the Joe Gibbs Racing driver showed is truly befitting of a Cup Series champion. He did not budge an inch and dominated a total of 51 laps out of 110 laps. With such a remarkable performance, even the veteran racer, Kyle Petty only had words of appreciation. However, for the legend, it was Kyle Busch and his RCR team that stole the show. He expressed these thoughts on the latest episode of NASCAR on NBC.

Kyle Petty and His Co-Host Nate Ryan Shed Insights on of Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr’s Performance
Last year Joe Gibbs accepted the fact, Truex Jr was not provided with the perfect car, that could prove his caliber on the tracks of Sonoma, but a year later Truex proved his real craftsmanship. He took the lead from Chase Elliott and held off Kyle Busch to take the fourth Sonoma win.
Speaking of this, NASCAR on NBC podcast host Nate Ryan, expressed, “Truex definitely had his full swing and sort of weird race that took two caution flags and of course, NASCAR has done away with yellow flags for stage breaks on road courses this year, and this is the second race we have seen that impact strategy.”
He added, “It seems to me though that Truex was the only guy, driving kinda all the way up through traffic at will and there was the first caution that came and we had the uncontrolled tire on the pits about halfway through the race.”
The host digressed from Martin Truex Jr and shed light on the fact, “There were about six or seven guys who pitted just before that came out. One was Kyle Busch, he ends up finishing second and goes from a probably top-15 car to a second-place car, another example of him coming off three wins this year, coming off this directory and gets a second place at Sonoma.”
“Where do you think things are right now for Kyle Busch after the race, he said if we keep doing these things we will be up-force for the championship. I don’t think anybody would have thought that in the first year at Richard Childress Racing. But through 16 races it does seem like that team is of title…”
To this, the veteran driver Kyle Petty expressed his thoughts on Kyle Busch. He said, “I said that going from Joe Gibbs Racing to Richard Childress Racing was a lateral step at best and I felt like it was a step back for a driver the caliber of Kyle Busch. I have to say once again, probably underestimated the talent, ability and focus drive of Kyle Busch, because I think Kyle Busch has single-handedly taken that team and done something special with it.”
