NASCAR is a competitive sport in which drivers and teams are willing to do almost anything that will give them an advantage on the track. Sometimes, that means bending the rules a little bit. The sport’s rules allow for teams to take advantage of certain loopholes without much repercussion but that was not what happened with Rick Hendrick who found himself in a precarious situation earlier this year.

NASCAR had doled out the heftiest combined punishment for one organization when they fined Hendrick Motorsports a whopping $400,000 for making changes to their cars outside of the rules. But that’s not all. HMS was docked 100 regular season points and 10 playoff points for Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott, and Alex Bowman.

Why was Rick Hendrick slapped with NASCAR’s harshest punishment?

But why did NASCAR dole out such a tough penalty to Rick Hendrick? In March this year, when the Cup Series was in its initial stages, HMS played an illegal card in Phoenix and hoped to get away with it.

The team had modified their cars’ louvers, which sit atop the radiator ducts and direct air out of the hood. Any changes made to these components have a significant impact on the downforce and speed of the car. NASCAR confiscated the louvers after practice at Phoenix.

The penalty was rescinded later on by a NASCAR appeals panel and the drivers had their points restored later on in the month but it was definitely a stressful period for Rick Hendrick.

Six months after the incident, former raced Kenny Wallace asked Kyle Petty about the matter and Petty went on to reveal a massive loophole in the NASCAR rulebook.

“Everyone would take the NASCAR rulebook and say, “How can I get in between these two rules,” and that’s just what you did. That’s what you did from 1949, the first time they ever run a Cup race until Rick was fined recently.

“I mean that‘s what you do and we are going to continue to see that. Whether it’s with hood louvers or whether it’s underbody, you’re gonna see somebody trying something because that’s the nature of the sport,” added the 63-year-old.

However, despite all the trials and tribulations HMS has faced this season, the team is currently in a good place as one of their drivers won the first race of the round of 12, granting the organization the coveted 300th Cup Series win.

The victory meant that Byron had won an incredible six races this season and HMS won their 300th race in the Cup Series. He took the lead from Bubba Wallace with only five laps to go in the race and held on to his advantage.

After the victory, Byron was ecstatic. “Man, that’s bada**. I finally got a good restart at the end. Just it was hot today. I think it’s finally hitting me. But No. 300 for Hendrick Motorsports,” he said.
