Is the backlash against Katelyn Larson's shotgun celebration justified, or are fans overreacting?

Like NASCAR drivers, their wives and other family members also enjoy the chemistry and a unique bond with the race fans. Although Kyle Larson is a well-established NASCAR driver, his wife Katelyn certainly has developed a separate fan base for herself. And it is all thanks to her famed shotgun celebration after every race won by her husband.

Katelyn Sweet isn’t new to sports. In 2019, after having a baby and getting married to Larson, she completed her first half marathon. Not just this; before she became an athlete, Katelyn was an equestrian. So, naturally, her fandom has grown multifold, also thanks to Larson’s wins and her antics in the victory lane from time to time. So much so that her supporters even ask for an autograph when they meet her.

Katelyn doesn’t seem to understand the hype

NASCAR returned to oval racing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this year. This was the first oval race after three years of road course racing since 2020. And it was Kyle Larson from Hendrick Motorsports who added a crown jewel win to his name in a year that he has been in red-hot form. It was indeed a redemption story for him after failing to attempt “The Double” and a sub-par showing in the Indy-500 race.

Larson clinching his fourth win of the season also meant that Katelyn would be able to show off her beer-chugging prowess. And, she certainly made the most of this opportunity, shot-gunning a beer on the iconic racetrack. Katelyn also joined Larson and the HMS team in the tradition of kissing the bricks. However, she still can’t seem to wrap her head around why the fans keep asking for her autograph.

As Kenny Wallace did a “Get to Know” episode with Katelyn Sweet, the community got some crazy insights on the Larsons. But what stood out was her autograph tale.

“Well, I always laugh when people ask for my autograph. I just don’t quite understand sometimes. I still feel very normal. I don’t feel any different from that time to now and seeing the same people that have been fans of these racetracks…but when they ask for an autograph, I’m just like Oh, I don’t really understand.” Katelyn said this on Kenny Conversations.

She further added that her unique celebration is nothing but normal, “I chugged a beer like that’s normal. But I guess that’s what people like about me, like you said. I stay very normal for the most part.” But it looks like this celebration is something that she purposely does to remind Larson about the first time they met.

Katelyn Sweet met Larson through her brother, Brad Sweet, who is also a professional driver, in 2014. Knowing that the Hendrick Motorsports driver has a history of competing in the World of Outlaws sprint car series. After a home track race in Elk Grove, California, Kyle Larson and Katelyn, who also lived nearby in nearby Grass Valley, joined in for the after-party one time in Placerville, California. As it turned out, the NASCAR star driver, in trying to impress his future wife, ended up on the floor.

The couple dated for almost 4 years, while their first child, Owen, was also born. The two got engaged in 2017, announcing it on Owen’s third birthday, followed by a wedding in 2018.

Remember when Kyle Larson himself described these events from their first magical meet back in 2021? He said, “We’re all partying that night and whatever; I think I was probably trying to show off for her, and I ended up getting wasted. She and a couple of other friends, obviously I was passed out, on the ground, in bad shape, and they colored all over me.”

It’s fair to say Larson won’t compete against Katelyn in a drinking championship. But, he can ensure Katelyn continues her celebration by winning the Cup Series championship this year.
