Fans might have hoped for a triumphant return to the Chili Bowl Nationals for Kyle Larson. The Hendrick Motorsports star shocked the racing community when it was revealed that he would be taking part in the Golden Driller event. However, his Thursday heat race did not go as planned, and he was turned upside down during the heat.

Midget racing is perhaps one of the most unpredictable forms of motor racing. With cars drifting all over the dirt track, ovals may be spectacular to watch, but one must never forget that there are human beings in those cars risking their lives. Larson had a scary moment at the Chili Bowl event but thankfully left unscathed.

With 5 laps to go, the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion was in P7 and trying to get past Christopher Townsend in P6. However, as the midgets drifted out of turn 2, Larson and Townsend’s cars made contact, and they were both flung into the air. The #45 was launched into the barriers, and it seemed like there was terminal damage. However, #98 of Yung Money was spun upside down, and things could have easily gone sideways.

In a recent update, veteran NASCAR journalist Bob Pockrass perfectly described the situation that Kyle Larson found himself in and what he needed to do to race in New Mexico on Saturday. His plan of action for the weekend might be completely disheveled. “Larson is going to need to rally to make it into the top-2 of the A-main in the qualifying night. If he doesn’t lock himself into the Saturday main event, it will be difficult for him to race in New Mexico (his first priority) on Saturday and get to Tulsa on time,” Pockrass tweeted.

It’s safe to say that the Hendrick Motorsports driver’s return to the Chilli Bowl Nationals has not been a happy one so far. Kyle Larson made some harsh comments about the event back in 2022 and said that he wouldn’t compete unless the purse value was increased. Yet he came back 2 years later and expressed his disappointment at how people read into his comments.

There was a lot of chatter over the Hendrick Motorsports driver boycotting the Chili Bowl Nationals. Several reports had used that particular word since the 31-year-old had not competed in the event for a couple of years. Larson came out and cleared the air in an interview with FloRacing, where he said that a big reason why he left was that he wanted to try different forms of motorsports.

“I did not miss the Chili Bowl last year but this year, as it approaches, and you get watching, and then when I realized how quickly the program is done and there’s this window of doing it, I was like, I really wanna go back. Even back then I never once said that I would not come to the Chili Bowl. I never used the word boycotting or anything like that. That part was frustrating last year,” he said.
