Skepticism surrounding the Next Gen cars can’t seem to end. After the furious outburst of Kevin Harvick post the Darlington Cook Out Southern Cup Series race, questions around the safety of these new machines are bound to arise.

When asked what Larson thinks about the Next Gen cars from a safety standpoint, he said, “Even before this year, injuries and safety is always on your mind no matter what car I’m in. I know every time I strap into anything, the risk of getting injured is up there, just because it is a dangerous sport. But when you’re in the car, you can’t really think about that.”

He further explained that race car drivers just have to focus on being quick. And revealed the thoughts that go through the mind of a driver before a crash. He said, “When those situations start where you’re getting ready to crash, you’re just kind of praying that nothing happens and you can walk out of it.”

However, he did agree that the Next Gen cars feel different from the old ones and seemed concerned about drivers getting hurt. He said, “Now it seems like this year and these cars and the hits being bigger, I feel like – at least in my mind – when I see somebody crash, I’m more concerned about them than I was before.”

Who apart from Kyle Larson is concerned about the Next Gen Car’s safety?

Apart from Kyle Larson, NASCAR drivers like Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, and Denny Hamlin have previously expressed their concern with the Gen 7 cars. After a multi-car crash at the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona, several reports of injuries surfaced.

Maximum drivers have suggested more crash testing and actual race simulation as a solution. Explaining how the current impacts in the new cars feel, Denny Hamlin said in an interview; “The best way I can describe it is like I got beat up at a bar and somebody was kicking me in the ribs while I was on the ground.”
