As the adrenaline from the Enjoy Illinois 300 settled, the NASCAR community once again turned toward Kyle Larson’s waiver situation. With veteran insiders Jeff Gluck and Jordan Bianchi revealing that some officials from NASCAR’s competition department are against the idea of Larson receiving a free pass into the playoffs, the situation for both Kyle Larson and the fans isn’t looking ideal.

With that being said, various stakeholders have stepped forward to dish out their opinions on whether Larson deserves the waiver. As for the ‘gray area’ that the rule of 100% participation creates, SiriusXM’s NASCAR Radio host Dave Moody made valid suggestions that the sport can implement to avoid a repeat of such a dilemma.

What can NASCAR do to prevent further scrutiny regarding the waiver rules?

As things stand, NASCAR has received widespread criticism from fans for the way Kyle Larson’s waiver request is being handled. With officials refusing to elaborate on a timeline for approval, the #5 HMS driver’s 2024 championship chances hang in the balance. But that’s not all. Granting Kyle Larson a waiver also brings with it a unique set of challenges.

With drivers like Joey Logano highlighting the confusion such exemptions create, Dave Moody believes the solution to NASCAR’s playoff requirements is simple. The insider shared on X, “I think the minimum requirement going forward should be 100% participation, with exemptions approved only IN ADVANCE. I cannot think of a major league sport (other than golf) that allows competitors/teams to skip a portion of the schedule.”

According to Moody, instances like a death in the family or uncalled emergencies would certainly call for an exemption. Similarly, Kyle Larson’s Double attempt should have had a waiver granted much earlier to avoid later confusion.

Moody concluded, “We all understand that things happen, and no one wants a driver penalized after experiencing a death in the family on race morning. But in cases like that, an exemption can easily be granted IN ADVANCE, based on a reasonably small list of allowable excuses.”

Kyle Larson holds onto the second spot in the regular season points standings despite missing the Coke 600. If NASCAR were to realistically deny his waiver appeal, that would create chaos in the community. Whilst some may think officials need to set waiver regulations in stone much earlier, the NASCAR community believes a major change is required to the playoff criteria.

Fans believe ‘performance should be the only qualification’ for a seat in the playoffs

With how NASCAR currently runs things, a driver must participate in all 26 races ahead of the playoffs as well as secure a win to have a guaranteed spot. Whilst this format has certainly upped the allure of winning a race, fans believe this has also been detrimental to NASCAR’s case in the Kyle Larson debacle.

According to fans, the current system of maximum participation alongside wins doesn’t work well for many reasons. One user highlighted, “Just determine the champion based on points earned for the entire season. Nobody will skip races and you won’t have to make up or enforce a rule to get them not to.” whilst another chimed in, “In my opinion: Performance should be the only qualification, not participation. Remember when Stefanik missed a race and still won a title?”

In comparison to other sports where athletes can take time off during championship rounds and still appear in the finale, fans felt NASCAR’s format was rather disadvantageous. For some, the very existence of a waiver raised concerns. A user shared, “Star players skip days all the time(the team doesn’t) and use substitutes for them. The driver is a player in the team. Substitutes should be allowed.”

Similarly, another fan also pointed out the issue of requiring exemptions. Just look to Formula 1, where if a driver misses a race, he loses out on the points but a substitute can come in to help the team out without repercussions. The user tweeted, “To be completely honest, I’m not too sure why it even needs an exemption. If you can miss a race and still be top 16 in points, then whatever. The intention of this system really only applies to someone if it’s a winner outside the top 16″

Moving over to Kyle Larson’s decision-making, perhaps the biggest argument against giving him a waiver is that Larson ‘chose’ the Indy 500 over the Coca-Cola 600. But with how the weather gods had rained on the Hendrick Motorsports x Arrow McLaren parade, fans gave the #5 driver the benefit of the doubt.

One fan shared, “I would understand if both races were scheduled to be run at the same time. But the double has been done before. Unfortunately weather played a factor. NASCAR should’ve granted or denied the waiver BEFORE the race.” another concluded, “Kyle didn’t wake up race morning and say I’m going to race the 500. This was planned over a year in advance. He had every intention to race the 600. If they didn’t want him to do the 500, should have said something earlier.”

At the end of the day, both Dave Moody and fans agreed on one factor; NASCAR should have had a backup plan well in advance. With that being said, do you think all this pressure will finally make the officials succumb to handing out the waiver?
