Chase Elliott's streak ends—Is this a sign of decline or just a bump in the road?

Going into the race most thought one thing, SVG was going to cross the checkered flag. He had just won the Xfinity race on Saturday and the belief that he could repeat what he did last year at the cup race loomed large. However, he quickly fell out of contention.

Instead, Reddick and Bowman were battling it out for the P1 position. But while all eyes were peeled on this duo, another set of duo were fighting it off for the 13th position and while one driver had not much to lose, the other lost a streak and the chance to get on top of the leaderboard.

Going into the race, Chase Elliott had a record that no one else did in three decades—finishing top 20 in 22 consecutive races! It’s a record, he at least hoped to keep the till the playoffs arrived. But well, it all changed at the final laps of the Chicago race. As Elliott muscled his way past Suarez, he pushed him a little, leading him to crash into Keselowski. While it did end the day for Keselowski, Suarez continued. But his continuation cost Elliott his streak. In the next turn, he clipped the rear of Elliott’s car, sending him spinning.

So while Chase Elliott was going to finish 13th, he ended up finishing 21st—talk about sour luck. And well, not just his streak was compromised, but also something bigger. He had the chance to catch up with the team leader and teammate Kyle Larson. See Kyle Larson, due to a brake issue, had crashed and was out. And Chase Elliott could have taken this golden opportunity to outrun his teammate and be on top of the leaderboard. But he failed to do so because of Bowman’s act.

Even Kyle Larson, who had come out of the race confronted the media and said it could be a possibility. Kyle Larson said, Yeah, I mean, it just brings everybody closer yet again. I’m sure he’ll [ Chase Elliott] be actually the point leader, depending on if he finishes where he’s running.”

Have an interesting take?

Well, lucky for Kyle Larson, he still is atop the points mountain. Elliott missed by a mile and could only finish 21st! Moreover, Elliott, missing his streak this time, gives him some breathing space on the top. But not much because now he is just 11 points behind him. As for Elliott, he was of course angered and he took the matter to the pit lanes, talking it out with Suarez!

Alex Bowman apologizes to Chase Elliott, but what’s done cannot be undone!

Kyle Larson finished 39th in the Chicago race. How often does that happen? Elliott knows he missed a golden chance to get on top of the board. All this while he has been scoring well, being in the top 20s, and ensuring he was just tailing behind and this was his chance. And it got missed because of Suarez. They had a conversation right at the pit stop.

While nothing much was audible, it looked like Suarez explained to Elliott the entire thing as it happened. Although Elliott looked displeased, he nodded and finally left after embracing Suarez. Well, given that he had so much to lose after what Suarez did, an embrace was the last thing anyone thought they would see. But that was real! We wonder what excuses would have been so good enough that Elliott walked away cool as a cucumber. But then they both in a flat out odds –that’s also rare!

But after the race, when Fronstretch caught hold of Bowman, he did seem like the felt guilty. And he said, “We got together a little bit in the last couple corners. He pushed me a little bit and then I pushed him with all my intention and I ended up hitting him pretty good on the very last corner. My bad on that.” While it might not be a full-blown apology, it’s a step toward making things okay.”

While he apologized, what is done is done and cannot be undone. But it’s a step toward making things right. As for Elliott, he might have lost the streak, but the championship is still not lost. And he very well could surpass his competitors! What do you think?
