Is Kyle Larson's dominance making NASCAR races too predictable, or is it a testament to his skill?

Kyle Larson has something of a winning habit this season. Before Charlotte Roval, he notched over 5 wins just in 2024, establishing himself as the leading contender for the Cup Series Championship. Charlotte Roval was no different. Larson beat leading road course experts like Allmendinger as well as SVG to bag the win, and he made it look easy.

Larson knows Charlotte was a dominant showing, and in the aftermath of the race, made this sentiment known.

Boring fun day for Kyle Larson at the tracks

Kyle Larson has been known to dominate elimination races and his feat at Charlotte Motor Speedway is no deviation from that. The No. 5 Chevrolet managed to make a sprawling win as it reached the finishing line 1. 511 seconds ahead of Christopher Bell. But that is not it! The Bank of America Roval marked his second victory at the Charlotte Motor Speedway with the first one during the 2021 Championship. Consequently, he was joined by two more Hendrick drivers to the Top 8 squad – Byron in the third position and Chase Elliott in the fifth position.

Leading 62 out of 109 laps, Larson had made the final pass for Allmendinger. This happened when only 43 laps were remaining to the crossing line. Since the pass, Larson had to simply focus on just maintaining the gap and avoiding accidents on the track. Larson started from the 6th position at the 3rd Row and swiftly crept his way to the top. Post Stage 2, Larson managed a 10th position even after a pit stop. However, towards the end of Stage 3, Larson was the top undisputed driver. It earned a verdict from him that only added to competitors’ misery.

In a post-match interview with NASCAR radio, Larson said, “Great day, a great car, and great start to our race which I think kind of helped reshape how that was gonna look. And then yeah, we were just upfront all day long. Got to flip the stages and yeah, our car was good and had some good restarts too. So that helped things and yeah it was just you know a fun boring day for us. We were able to get which I mean we had the caution after that final stop anyways. We gapped the No.20 by a lot and you know Allmendinger too. I thought you knew him pitting a few laps before us he would come out in front of us. But we had a gap on him so we must have had a very good cycle there”.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Kyle Larson's dominance making NASCAR races too predictable, or is it a testament to his skill?

Have an interesting take?

AJ Allmendinger, who was just behind Larson, took a pit stop during the second stage with 25 laps remaining. This contributed to him finishing the race in 6th position. While Allmendinger took a pit stop before Larson, the latter managed to maintain the gap. The only job Larson had towards the end of the laps was to maintain the gap and defend. This contributed to a rather “boring” race that lacked too many twists and turns.

The victory did look smooth, however, it has been the epitome of sheer hard work and a united team. His pit crew was fast and this allowed Larson to minimize the time spent on the pit. Recounting the contribution of the crew, Kyle Larson said, “pit crew has been on it all year long, so proud of their efforts, proud of the whole road crew effort, everybody back at the shop too..so yeah been fun. Hopefully can keep it up”. After the victory at Charlotte Speedway, Larson now will race directly at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. This has put forth anticipation and excitement in the hearts of Larson fans.

Will Vegas continue to prove lucky for Larson

Charlotte was nothing out of the ordinary for Kyle Larson. One only has to look back to the cutoff race at Bristol, a race that Larson won in dominant fashion. After leading 462 laps, some in the NASCAR community felt outraged at the lack of competition. What’s different at Charlotte was the fight that went on in the midfield.

The victory at Charlotte Motor Speedway has paved a direct spot for Larson at the Vegas Motor Speedway. Kyle Larson’s rendezvous with this Speedway earlier in 2024 has been quite lucky. At the Pennzoil 400 NASCAR Cup Series race, Larson had made a stunning victory. He led 181 out of 267 laps. He also led the first two stages of the race which further enhanced his chances of winning the Vegas Speedway. This victory had also passed the lead to Kyle Larson from Busch who happened to finish at the 26th position. Larson’s dominance on the Las Vegas Speedway is a force that can be hard to reckon with.

Before this victory, Larson had also occupied the first position at the South Point 400 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs Round of 8. He led 133 out of 267 laps making him the driver with the most number of lap leads. Larson had put up a pretty impressive block from Christopher Bell and swept his way to the first position. Will Larson show the same kind of supremacy on the Vegas Speedway and carve his way a step closer to the Cup?
