Now in a time where the majority of the manufacturers are taking the EV route for the sake of “conservation,” racing promotions also have been forced to take similar steps. For instance, the most popular racing series, Formula 1, had to give in and start their own electric series, Formula E, back in 2014.
The whole idea around electric motorsports, however, isn’t something old-school enthusiasts admire. While F1 changed its ways, NASCAR stuck to theirs. Unlike F1, the Stock Car Racing series hasn’t even changed its engine configurations and still runs the mighty V8s that fans love to hear. But for Larson, the exhaust note is a bit too on the louder side.
Yes, you heard it right. The HMS driver recently confessed that the Next-Gen cars are way too loud for his liking. When asked about the mufflers shortly after NASCAR’s 2-day test in Phoenix, the driver dropped quite a revelation, turning off core fans.
He said, “I haven’t felt really a heat difference you know I can definitely tell sound difference which I like and I think, I definitely think our race cars are way too loud and probably are still too loud with the mufflers so…”
The reporter then asked if that’s a good thing, an advantage to have loud race cars to which he replied with a “No.”
Mufflers have been a divisive topic over the past couple years. While @KyleLarsonRacin didn’t notice a change in cooling, he’s a fan of what was tested today … he believes it will help the “fan experience.” #NASCAR @drdiandra and @devonhenry77 with the questions. pic.twitter.com/EmKUWNLWRZ

“Get the fire going, I got Larson memorabilia to burn,” wrote a fan who was disgraced to hear one of the sport’s most talented drivers say that the cars are “way too loud.” On the other hand, another fan relayed the obvious, “That’s the second worst thing he’s ever said” while another user commented, “And this is the moment that Kyle Larson became NASCAR’s most unpopular driver.”
Larson’s comments definitely got fans thinking, as one fan wrote, “can’t spell Kyle Larson without a few L’s” while another fan chimed in, “I’m seriously debating on changing my flair now.”
