Ladybugs are talismans of good luck. In different cultures and fields, ladybugs are seen as an omen of good things. The belief doesn’t get any different in the world of sports, either. Even world-class athletes who have honed their art for years believe in certain superstitions. Among NASCAR drivers, Kyle Larson has used a ladybug to attract good luck since childhood.

Kyle Larson reminded the world of his good luck charm after San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk revealed a signal from the heavens. Aiyuk was among the best performers in the NFC Championship final as the 49ers beat the Detroit Lions 34-31. The win also means that the 49ers will again proceed to the Super Bowl and battle the Kansas City Chiefs for the title.

Speaking to FOX Sports in a post-match interview, Brandon Aiyuk was questioned about one of the best moments in the match against the Detroit Lions. Aiyuk might have been a bit lucky there as the Lions’ receiver couldn’t hold on to the ball, and the 49ers star dived to put it past the goal line for a field goal. Speaking about the incredible moment, Aiyuk revealed that the comeback from his team had been bestowed upon them by fortune.

Before the game, a ladybug landed on my shoe… Just great luck, God was with us today, great win, bang bang Niner gang,” said Brandon Aiyuk. Kyle Larson, a big proponent of a ladybug’s magical abilities, saw this as a moment to reinforce his belief. The Hendrick Motorsports #5 driver tweeted with a ladybug emoji, “does the trick again.”

Kyle Larson and ladybugs go long back. Since his childhood days of racing, Larson has had an image of a ladybug on his race cars. According to him, it’s a good-luck charm that has protected him from harm in a hazardous sport and been a harbinger of success. Maybe Larson’s miraculous comeback in the 2021 championship race was the work of the ladybug, too!

The story began with Kyle Larson’s father, Mike, believing in the tale through three-time Indy 500 winner Johnny Rutherford. In 1980, Rutherford noticed that a ladybug had visited him. Capitalizing on the good luck, Rutherford reassured his crew members that he would win the race convincingly to claim his third victory. Eventually, he stood on his word and won the race.

In 2014, Larson was coming on the back of three successive second-place finishes in March. One of the fans dug deep to find out a ladybug on Larson’s car from the Auto Club 400 and shared the image in the comments as he wrote, “Found this pic I took at Fontana back in 2014. That little bugger is hard to see on a red car.”

Another fan praised Aiyuk’s humorous demeanor and how he revealed his charm and commented, “Best interview ever!”
