While recounting his performance during the heat race, Kyle Larson explained that after several heats, the process became clearer to him. He expressed his preference for starting in the eighth position over the seventh, saying that due to a previous incident where a competitor broke and caused confusion on the tracks; despite his initial nerves, Larson executed a solid first lap and secured his transfer, which set him up well for the main event.

However, he did face a moment of doubt during the race when he encountered Rico Abreu, his rival on the dirt tracks, and got caught in traffic beside him. While Abreu struggled to navigate around a slower car, he credits his success to being in the right place at the right time. He said, “I figured my best hope was to just follow the lapper and maybe exit with Rico but I saw the lapper hit the burn and wheelie across the track…Yeah that’s kind of how it worked out.” He may have called it luck, but Larson’s ability to find clean air was no fluke as he strategically calculated the movements of the other drivers and took the lead to victory.
As he prepares for the upcoming race at Knoxville, Larson looks back on his experience from last year, where he also started from the pole position, and says that he understands the importance of track conditions and the competition he faces. “you get a lot of good fast cars right behind us so, we’ll have to be at our game again and hopefully we can pull it off.” He says this as he recognizes the need to stay sharp and focused to maintain his lead.
