Is NASCAR doing enough to ensure the safety of drivers' families at the track?

For NASCAR drivers and their families, living life on the road is just part of the job. Kyle Busch’s clan is no exception, cruising around the country in their swanky motorhome. But the nomadic lifestyle isn’t without its hiccups. Just ask Rowdy’s wife, Samantha Busch, who recently had a harrowing experience at Darlington.

Taking to her Instagram stories, Samantha Busch described her sheer panic for her daughter Lennix Key Busch and how it triggered her fierce mama bear instincts. Sometimes, the road trip comes with more than just adrenaline, pit stops, and race talk—it throws in a side of fear as well!

It was sweltering hot at Darlington when Samantha Busch decided to get back into her motorhome and put her daughter Lennix to sleep. Soon after, the power in their camp trailer went off and the generator failed to kick in. With the heat getting to Kyle Busch’s wife, she decided to call the bus driver and inform him about the dilemma that she was facing with the generator. However, when the matter wasn’t resolved after some time, Samantha decided to wake her daughter up so that they could sit outside, perhaps in the car, wherever they wouldn’t have to deal with the heat. That’s when the problems began.

Recalling the horrifying experience on her Instagram stories dating on September 3, the lifestyle blogger said, “I go to press the, we have like these little buttons. It says, you know, bedroom door and it’s an air pocket door. And press the button and I’m like, oh I’m an idiot. It’s, there’s no power. The door’s not going to open. Like I always thought because it was air it would still open. But then I was like, well okay, now what? So the bus driver’s like, ‘Well just turn on the bus and it should be able to open. Okay, that makes sense. Turn the bus, press the button. Nothing. Now it is hotter than heck on the bus and I’m starting to panic.”

Concerned for her daughter’s safety, Samantha Busch went on to call the company that made the bus and informed her about an emergency release valve in one of the bathroom cabinets. However, when she finally located the valve, nothing happened when she pulled it, which turned a worrying situation into a full-on crisis for the mother of two.

Running out of options, she attempted to break the door, but her efforts proved to be futile. As a last resort, she called 911 while pounding on the bedroom door, screaming for her daughter, who was locked inside with no escape.

Thankfully when the power resumed for a brief second, Samantha Busch rushed into the room and grabbed her daughter, who was blissfully asleep. The emergency medical technician applied ice bags all over her to combat the extremely hot conditions, and thankfully, Lennix Key Busch was back to her normal self soon after.

The incident was undoubtedly a scary experience for Kyle Busch’s wife, who will think twice before closing the bedroom door in her luxurious motorhome going forward.

Kyle Busch had bought the custom-built motorhome in 2018 and along with his wife gave fans a tour of his home away from home in a social media post. Their Prevost Coach motorhome is handcrafted by Liberty Coach Inc. and uses top-notch technology combined with high-end materials.

Incidentally, Liberty’s co-managing partner Kurt Konigseder said that “designing a coach as ‘child-friendly’ as this one is something we’d never done before,” when talking about the purchase from NASCAR’s Cup Series icon. The coach needed many modifications to suit Brexton, the Busch family’s only child at that time. Many features such as a baby gate at the very front of the coach, were included as part of child-proofing the luxury coach.

The recent ordeal experienced by Samantha Busch may have been off-putting for her given how she is usually well-prepared when on the road with her family.

Samantha Busch has been accompanying her two-time Cup Series-winning husband on the road for years now. With her vast experience of dealing with the many challenges that come with living in a motorhome, Samantha has devised a valuable strategy to make the most out of her race weekends.

She has a notebook that is filled with details about her routine from each track, ranging from her favorite restaurant to the location of children’s museums and fun hiking activities that she can engage in. This helps Samantha Busch keep herself entertained with her children Brexton Locke Busch and Lennix Key Busch, while Kyle Busch is busy on the racetrack.

Despite their nomadic lifestyle, Rowdy’s wife in 2019 said, “We’re just like any other family. People say, ‘Wow, you’ve got a three-year-old and you’ve got all this stuff going on, why don’t you just stay at home?’ I’m like, ‘Because we’re a family, we love spending time together, and this is our time.’ … Kyle is [Brexton’s] absolute idol, so even sometimes, it’s a lot to travel when you’re going, going, going. For us, it’s just the best.”

Kyle Busch’s son Brexton has been traveling to race locations since the tender age of six, and he is so accustomed to the lifestyle that even during the offseason when the family is at home, he insists on hanging around in the motorhome and resting on his bunk bed.

It’s heartwarming to see that the Richard Childress Racing driver has such a good support system to help him through his NASCAR journey, despite the many sacrifices that come with the lifestyle of a racing driver.

Rowdy, who came close to securing his first win of the season at Daytona and Darlington, will miss out on the playoffs for the first time in 11 years, but he can take solace in the fact his family will be accompanying him for the remaining 10 races of the season.
