Has Kyle Busch lost his edge, or is this just a temporary setback in his career?

Kyle Busch broke his record in the NASCAR Cup Series 2024, but not in the right way. Although the two-time NASCAR Cup Series Championship entered the season with high hopes, and yet he ended up disappointing both himself and the fans. This outcome signifies the end of an impressive streak that Busch had undertaken and managed to uphold through 19 long seasons of his racing career. While it has proven to be detrimental for Kyle Busch himself, even the team Richard Childress Racing has faced the perils.

The way he has been able to maintain his record throughout the years is a testimony of how skills and resilience go hand in hand. Over the two decades, she has demonstrated the ability to march for victory irrespective of what the situation has been. While he has not been able to keep up with his record this year, it does not prove that the future will be as uncertain.

Busch ends his 19 time long legacy

Given the kind of history that Busch had exhibited over the past 19 years, fans hoped that he got RCR and himself the win at the Phoenix Raceway. He is one of the few drivers to mark at least one victory in each of the Cup Series seasons in which he appeared. As this expectation put a lot of pressure on the driver, Busch finished in 21st place at Phoenix Raceway on Sunday.

However, this is not all! Busch missed the playoffs for the very first time since 2012 and this was also his most disappointing average finish since his rookie season, which dates back to 2005. But his run in the season was not always deplorable. Kyle Busch was able to make a comparatively good start where he ended up with four top seven finishes. This also includes a total of three consecutive top-five finishes right? This was also his best streak given from the 24th race in Michigan till the 27th race in Atlanta.

In Atlanta itself, he came to a very close win where he could have made the victory move but he ended third in a three-wide photo finish. If Busch had managed to mark a victory at either of the races, he would have easily made it to the playoffs. This form is in stark difference with the 2023 season when he managed to win three races and that too at just the first half of the season. Busch had also missed out on the opportunity to mark his victory at the Daytona 500 as he went through major pit road issues. While he has made a disappointing run in the 2024 season, one cannot forget the legacy that he has already carved himself.

What’s your perspective on:

Has Kyle Busch lost his edge, or is this just a temporary setback in his career?

Have an interesting take?

Busch’s near misses on tracks for this season are an indication that all might not be well at the tracks for him. While he was the only hope for the Richard Childress Racing team to make an impact on the tracks for this season, there are new drivers that one might look up to. This includes names like Erik Jones and even John Hunter Nemechek. While these drivers can make use of the off-season to learn more, Kyle Busch also needs to amp his skills up and make a stellar impact for the upcoming races.

Before the Phoenix Finale on Sunday, Busch was seen in quite a jovial mood when he took a sarcastic dig at Christopher Bell. Bell had attempted the wall climb or the very well-known “Hail Melon” move that has been now banned by NASCAR due to safety violations.

When asked about how he would salvage his position at Phoenix, Busch took a sly dig at Bell and said, “How many laps is the race? 312? I’m gonna wall ride for 312 and that will save it and I will win (smirk). But realistically, no. It’s all about how good are you. Can you keep yourself close enough to the front and have a shot”. Not only that, after Martinsville proved to be the breeding ground for race manipulations and there were three back-to-back penalties, the drivers had met with the NASCAR team to discuss how these practices could be curbed.

Reacting to what happened during the meeting, Busch said, “So Mike wasn’t there, so I didn’t see it as a stern point being made, but it was one that was talked about, so I mean, they are not yelling, and screaming, and I don’t think so they are going to, so it’s probably a lot harsher than I took it”.

This comes as a reaction after drivers thought that the meeting was going to be quite topsy turvy and can lead to threats from NASCAR as well. While Busch has been able to steer across such controversies, his inability to mark a victory on the Phoenix Raceway has attracted criticisms and requests for retirement from fans.
