Rough, bumpy, slippery! While Kyle Busch used those words to describe NASCAR’s inaugural Chicago Street Circuit, the words could also be transposed to Rowdy’s 2023 season. Earlier sitting in the 6th spot on NASCAR’s Cup Series standings, Busch moved up to the 3rd rank before dropping to the 5th spot after his fourth DNF during the Crayon 301 at NHMS.

Arriving at the Pocono Raceway for the upcoming Pocono 400, Kyle Busch talked about his struggles at the Richard Childress Racing camp in the pre-race presser.

Ever since winning the Overton’s 400 at Pocono Raceway during the 2017 season, Kyle Busch has won at The Tricky Triangle four times. Continuing his winning streak till 2021, last season saw Rowdy finish second at Pocono Raceway behind former Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, Denny Hamlin. Struck by bad luck, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch were stripped of their respective 1st- and 2nd-place finishes after their cars failed to pass post-race inspection, with Chase Elliott declared the winner thereafter.

With these events in mind, Busch was questioned about his hunger to win at Pocono during the course of the pre-race presser. “Yeah, I wouldn’t say the hunger diminishes in any week more so than the next. Missed opportunity last week. I couldn’t carry it. I tried like hell to carry it, just couldn’t do it. You know, so, that hurt us last week in not finishing and at least score some points,” Rowdy said.

Revealing RCR’s nemesis, Kyle Busch further added, Short track package has been our nemesis and still is. So many ideas have been thrown around and we have tried different ideas and concepts and none of them have hit it yet. Obviously, we haven’t found the golden ticket.”

As stage one of the Crayon 301 at New Hampshire neared its final laps, Kyle Busch’s #8 Chevy lost rear wheel traction, spinning into the outer wall. With his #8 machine suffering irreparable damage on the right rear, race day ended early for Busch. But this wasn’t Rowdy’s only incident in New Hampshire, as he had also suffered from a wreck during the qualifying stage. Media personnel at the Pocono Raceway asked Kyle Busch what went wrong last weekend, to which the #8 RCR driver replied by disclosing his team’s biggest issue.

“It was the same thing every time. Just loose, no grip. I can’t feel the rear or back of the car getting into the corners, on entry, especially getting into the turn. Just tiptoeing and just trying to hold the steering wheel straight and not give it wheel,” Kyle Busch said.

The RCR driver further added, “And anytime you give it wheel and ask for it to pull the car through the corner, the rear just steps out and the rear can’t hold it. So, that was our biggest issue. That has been our biggest issue on all short tracks.”
