It has been nearly a month since NASCAR’s penalties saga has been going on. One of NASCAR’s many victims is the Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin. Although, if we’re being honest, Hamlin may have brought it upon himself with his confession. That was after he collided with rival Ross Chastain, and appeared to confess that it was a deliberate act. Now, his former teammate Kyle Busch has weighed in on the issue, after Hamlin’s appeal was rejected.

It’s evident that there is a lot of confusion regarding NASCAR’s penal code, even among veteran drivers like Kyle Busch. This could be one of the reasons for Busch’s surprise response to the question regarding Kyle Busch Motorsports‘ truck getting penalized.

During a press conference in Bristol on Sunday, Busch mentioned, “I’m actually kind of surprised on the whole Denny deal. I feel like a lot of that is … he did a really really good job of explaining it. I listened to his podcast of this week and I’ve been through some of those appeals before.

“You think you’ve done a good job of selling your case and they actually kind of back down on the other side. So you think you’ve got a really good shot of getting something reversed or overturned. And then it just completely sideswipes you that it doesn’t happen that way.

“I have no clue how that is a penalty, when in the rulebook if you basically get into somebody or wreck somebody, then it can be a penalty of any sort they want to enforce on you or infringe on you.”

Kyle Busch even spoke of some double standards in NASCAR. According to him, there were occasions where some drivers got away scot-free after wrecking others. Unsurprisingly, the first driver that he named was the infamous Joey Logano. He observed that at the Coliseum, Logano spun him out, but managed to fly under the radar.

He continued, “So, at the Clash, how come Joey Logano wasn’t penalized for wiping me out? You know what I mean? Every chance somebody crashes from somebody else from car contact, it can be a penalty, a fine, it can be whatever. The rulebook contradicts itself quite a lot and all of us have a very hard understanding of exactly what’s what.

“It is what it is.”

Bob Pockrass then asked him to comment on his further course of action as his Truck Series team has been handed over a 10-point penalty. Busch’s response was rather apathetic. He simply said, “Nope. No point in appealing. We’ll lose. I don’t have enough money to afford lawyers, so we’ll let it go.”

To come full circle, considering that the penalty on Denny Hamlin is not as heavy as those levied on the Cup Series counterparts, it makes sense to not get entangled in the quagmire of the appeals process.
