Kurt Busch outshines Kyle again—Is the elder Busch the true NASCAR legend in the family?

One of the most intense feuds in NASCAR started with the Charlotte Motor Speedway… and as Kurt Busch put it, because his younger brother, “like any little brother, has little brother syndrome: ‘I’m going to do everything better, faster, and quicker than you.’” The Busch siblings may have reconciled a year later, but it turns out Kyle Busch missed out on not just a million dollars in Charlotte but also a record his brother has, partially thanks to the speedway.

When it comes to records, who doesn’t know that the younger Busch has the most wins in the Xfinity and Truck series? Or the fact that he’s only the third driver in NASCAR history to win at least 100 races in a single series. However, he’s not the only driver who’s contributed to the Busch family legacy in NASCAR. That said, do you know what record Kurt Busch holds?

Kurt Busch has a stellar record to boast. Kurt, with Kyle Larson, holds the record for having the fastest qualifying times on a maximum number of racetracks. They both have the fastest time on 4 out of the 26 NASCAR Cup series tracks. Kurt’s first one came in 2014 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, with a time of 198.771. Maybe he was too fast, as that race ended with him blowing out his engine. He then conquered yet another track in 2016, qualifying with a time of 196.378 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

However, he did not stop there; in the next year, he clocked the fastest time of 200.915 in Texas. Kurt Busch’s record shows his dominance with pace. His final one was at the Bank of America Roval 400, with a qualification time of 106.868.

Kurt’s impressive pace is something Kyle Busch could really use right now with only four races left for him to qualify for the playoffs. While Kyle has added some great wins to the Busch family name on the track, there’s also some off-track rivalry brewing between the brothers.

Why don’t the Busch siblings get along?

Have an interesting take?

Kurt Busch has had a stellar career, with one Cup Series championship, 779 race starts, and over 34 wins. In stats, Kyle is bigger than Kurt. However, the elder brother makes sure to do his elderly duties. Before the 2024 Daytona, in a press conference, Kurt Busch sarcastically told Kyle, “I think I’m on the lower bottom right if I remember right. It actually says Kurt and doesn’t say Kyle, so that’s one thing I still have up on him, otherwise, he’s got two championships and double the wins but I got the Harley Earl (Daytona 500 trophy) at home and he does not.”

You all must remember the letter by Kurt to Kyle, which read, “Dear, Kyle.” This letter was for Kyle Larson and not Kyle Busch. In reality, the siblings don’t get along very well. In an interview, Kyle Busch blamed Kurt for getting hatred in the early days of his career. He had said, “When I came back to NASCAR, I came back in the Xfinity Series to run a part-time schedule, and I was in 87 Ditech car, and by then Kurt wasn’t necessarily making the best of friends on NASCAR level. So when I got to driver’s intros for my first Xfinity Series race, I got booed out of there, and I was like, what the heck, I didn’t do anything; it’s Kyle, not Kurt.”

For a long, long time, the siblings did not even talk to each other. It was because of a crash in a 20o7 race, where the blame game couldn’t be settled between the two. It was then at their grandma’s birthday when their grandma forced a truce. However, the fact is that both are champions of the sport.

One retired, and the other is struggling to get a footing in the current season. What is in store for the 39-year-old in the races to come and the sprint to the playoffs? Will Kurt laud him for his 3rd championship, or will he nag him for missing out? Only time will tell.
