It was the end of an era for the most successful Truck Series team. Spire Motorsports‘ takeover of Kyle Busch Motorsports was released. Yet, the news didn’t die down despite the buzz on the ongoing playoffs. The end of KBM reverberated like a personal loss to fans of the champion racer.

The most sensational events also lose steam a few days later. But the sale of Kyle Busch’s passion project continues to wrench the broken hearts of the NASCAR fandom. And it was evident team owner Busch felt no different.

In the pre-race interview prior to the Truck race at Talladega Superspeedway, a somber Busch sat in front of reporters and braced himself for the last few race previews of his longstanding team. But even before the first question, the exceptional driver felt compelled to reinforce the reason behind this life-changing decision. Seemingly grappling with a wave of nostalgia, Kyle Busch emphasized the emotional attachment of his family to KBM.

He said, “This is obviously a super bittersweet moment with everything that has gone on over the years. With Samantha and I starting the Truck team back in 2010 and having this dream and it becoming a reality.”

The proud driver and team owner expressed his gratitude to every single person who was responsible for taking a single Truck team to a 100-win reality. All that’s due to the great men and women, everybody that’s walked through the doors of KBM that’s put in their heart and soul to building that place to what it has been. And the successful organization of what it’s been today.”

Further, Busch reminisced about the budding racers who are Cup series leaders today because of his driver development program. I couldn’t be happier with the way that the business has gone. 100 wins and 18 different winners and drivers that have come through there that have now made it to the Xfinity or Cup Series level.”

Until the playoffs began, Kyle Busch was an unstoppable force of nature. The record holder of the highest Xfinity and Truck wins added three more Cup wins to his overflowing tally this season. He qualified for the playoffs, his Truck Series team was a roaring success, and he spelled ambitious plans of competing against his son Brexton in a NASCAR race several years down the line. And then slowly the rising tide lost its fierce momentum and gentle waves replaced the raging waters.

Busch’s playoff races became a series of endless disappointments. After selling his late modal team two years ago, he parted with Kyle Busch Motorsports, listed his lakefront house for sale, and molded his fanciful dreams to accommodate familial responsibilities.

The 2xchampion dwelled, “It’s been a real dream come true for me, for KBM, and for our family. I just feel like I haven’t been able to give it as much of my devoted attention as it needs and being around that much with Braxton racing and family stuff, me racing and trying to focus on that and being with the cup team and things.”
