The Tulsa Shootout is in full swing, and with it comes some serious dirt racing action. But this year, there’s a family duo that’s got everyone talking: Kyle Busch and his son, Brexton Busch. Kyle, a seasoned pro in the NASCAR world, has been hitting the dirt tracks with Brexton, and one of the main reasons is simple—he loves racing alongside his son.

Earlier this year, both of them snagged a Micro Sprint Championship at Millbridge Speedway. Still, as good as Brexton is, there’s no escaping the nerves that come with being a parent in the stands, especially when racing is as high-speed and dangerous as dirt track racing. Brexton has had a strong start—winning heat races and even securing the pole position in Junior Sprints qualifying. While Kyle is a proud dad, he’s also been known to get a little anxious when Brexton’s behind the wheel. At the Tulsa Shootout, Kyle opened up about the mix of emotions he feels when it’s his son on the track.

Both Kyle and Brexton are running multiple classes at the Tulsa Shootout, each hoping to get their hands on the coveted Golden Driller trophy. For Kyle, dirt racing is a fun escape, but it’s a different story for Brexton—he’s all in, and his skills are quickly turning heads.

But, surely Kyle Busch is going to be on the edge of his seat, with nervous cheers as Brexton runs the main event. Speaking with Floracing, he revealed how he gets stressed when Brexton races. He said, “To be brutally honest, my nerves, when Brexton rolls on the ramp are sky high.” While Busch has no doubts about Brexton’s race prowess. He worries that a bunch of kids going head-on in a race might still lack the maturity and it’s worrisome.

“Brex, he does a great job. When he gets out on the track. I mean it’s stressful, just because a lot of the kids they don’t really know, they don’t have the sense of what they know or should know. Of what to do to race right? Race craft all that. They are good. There are a lot of them that are really good. When you get into heat races, you have no idea who you are lined up with. So the nerves definitely get going, you are a little scared of what might happen,” Busch added.

Speaking of racecraft, Busch hasn’t been much of a dirt racing guy. With over 200 wins across the three national series of NASCAR to go with championships at Xfinity and Cup level, it’s safe to say Busch knows the pavement well. However, on dirt, the father becomes the student.

While Kyle may have decades of experience in NASCAR, when it comes to dirt racing, he’s still learning the ropes. That’s where Brexton comes in—yep, you read that right. The 9-year-old is already schooling his dad on the finer points of dirt track racing.

“There was a race earlier this year at Airport Speedway where Brexton told me to run the bottom. But of course, I went up top trying to make something happen,” Kyle shared with a laugh. “Afterward, Brexton was like, ‘I told you to run the bottom!’ It’s fun, though. We work hard to prep, and it’s great to have that time together.”

And Brexton’s not cutting his dad any slack. “If he doesn’t do too well, I’ll give him some advice,” Brexton said. “And if I don’t do too good, he’ll give me some tips. I watch a few races ahead of mine and then run back down to tell him how the track is—if it’s slick, where to run, stuff like that.”

It’s clear these two have a pretty fun, and maybe a little competitive, relationship when it comes to racing.

Kyle’s dirt racing journey is still in its early stages, but with Brexton showing real promise, it won’t be long before the father-son duo could be swapping tips on how to navigate stock car tracks. For now, they’re making the most of their time on the dirt. But hey, don’t be surprised if you see Kyle taking some advice from his son at the upcoming Chili Bowl.
