One of the most unbelievable facts in NASCAR is that Kyle Busch does not have a Daytona 500 win to his name. The two-time Cup Series champion has come close several times but has never been able to get the job done. In the 2024 season, Busch will be looking to break that winless streak in The Great American Race, as he explained what it has been like for him in the event over the years in a recent interview with FOX.
Sadly, last year was an unusual one for Kyle Busch. He started off the season pretty well with three wins but never found that form again. Things have to be more consistent this year as the driver of the #8 car looks to win his third NASCAR Cup Series championship. However, the very first step on that road is the Great American Race.

Busch’s record in the Daytona 500 is not very flattering. The 38-year-old has participated in the event 19 times and has only managed to earn 5 top-10 and 3 top-5 finishes. They might be considered decent numbers for others, but they aren’t great for someone of Rowdy’s caliber. He will be looking to change that on February 18, when NASCAR goes racing at the Daytona International Speedway.
Speaking about The Great American Race in a recent interview with FOX, Kyle Busch explained how the event has been one in which he has not been the most consistent. He said that apart from the times he finished in the top 3, more often than not he would suffer a crash that prematurely ended his race or put him in a bad spot. This year, the #8 team will look to avoid that.
“Man I would love nothing more than to win the Daytona 500. It’s been feast or famine it seems and there have been a lot of years I’ve finished 2nd or I’ve finished 3rd, I mean there’s 5, 6 times that I can count on but the rest of the time, ending up in a crash on the hook and ending up in the trailer early. We don’t want that to happen. It would be nice to get it done this year and be on victory lane celebrating at the end of the night,” the 2-time Cup Series champion said.

As the season-opener draws nearer, Kyle Busch will have a chance to finally get the job done on the 20th time of asking. If he does win on February 18, Rowdy would have emulated another Richard Childress Racing driver in terms of the Daytona 500. That driver is none other than the legendary Dale Earnhardt.
Will Rowdy be able to emulate ‘The Intimidator’ this year?

He may have won 7 Cup Series championships, but Dale Earnhardt struggled his whole career to win the Daytona 500. The RCR legend won the Great American Race once in his career, which came at the 20th time of asking. Kyle Busch currently stands in a similar place, and it will be interesting to see if he can emulate The Intimidator. One thing is certain: Rowdy is looking forward to fighting against several drivers on what he believes is a level playing field.

“Being able to score that win in a restrictor-plate-style race where there’s 30 other guys that are vying for the win and have a legit shot for the win…You go to other places and sometimes the drivers aren’t very good at those tracks or sometimes their cars, their teams, or the manufacturers or whatever, they don’t really line up well for those tracks. So I feel like the restrictor-plate stuff though is pretty level for everybody,” the 38-year-old said, as per Speed Sport.
