Richard Childress Racing went into a deep slumber for several years after 2013. Kevin Harvick brought in four victories in the 2013 season, but after that, the team lagged behind. In 2016, the team managed to rally in six top-10 finishes in 108 starts. The trio of Austin Dillon, Paul Menard, and Ryan Newman did little to wake the team out of its sleep. But the addition of Kyle Busch to that list changed the game.
Richard Childress and Kyle Busch go way back. Now they may be working together and enjoying victory parties. But they have a darker history, and Busch knows exactly how energetic Childress is. Childress’ fiery side was revealed recently after Kyle Busch faced yet another Daytona loss due to pit crew faults.

Busch may be the winningest driver with titles in all three series: Cup, Xfinity, and Truck. But there’s a painful hole in his heart: he just went winless at the Daytona 500 for the 20th year. His team owner, Richard Childress, highlighted his woes with an aggressive outburst on Monday. The RCR owner made it clear that his team should do better to meet his towering ambitions.
Kyle Busch recently spoke about his owner’s unique personality. When Childress asked the pit crew over the radio to “get your head out of your a*s,” Busch was unaware. “Oh that wasn’t on my channel so I didn’t hear it,” he said with a knowing smile.
Busch acknowledged his team’s undying efforts and said he deserved to be on the receiving end of Childress’s blows. “Sometimes he needs to tell me that.” Then Kyle Busch went on to add points to Childress’s feisty personality.
“Richard is very involved and wants any situation to get better. If we’re not winning every single race out of the year, then how did we lose that one race? What can we do to make it better? That’s a racer’s mentality.”
Busch rallied behind his team. “It’s tough sometimes when you have the human element. We all make mistakes. I made tons of them last year and my crew stuck behind me – was passionate that I was their driver and wanted to go to the next week and figure out how to win the next one. I know where Richard is coming from, and I appreciate that – the emphasis he puts on greatness and wanting to be better.”
Previously, Kyle Busch voiced his displeasure after his team acted up. But recently, he has had to make way for his Childress who took over as the lead vocalist over team communications. Both Kyle Busch and Richard Childress had a violent face-off 13 years back.

The transition from a hateful to a strong, intimate relationship is the strangest yet most beautiful thing. “Kyle has been really — he’s such a pleasure to work with,” Childress said. “Everybody says, ‘Man, how y’all going to get along?’ Same questions they asked me about, ‘You and Dale won’t last six months.’ We lasted 20 years.”
Richard Childress’ raging personality may be the engine of the RCR team. We hope his towering ambition sees the team through some colorful victories in the coming races.
