Kyle Busch and NASCAR haven’t seen eye to eye for decades. Over his 20-year career, the two-time Cup Series champion has been openly critical of NASCAR’s choices and decisions. Often stirring the controversy pot, the former Hendrick Motorsports driver’s NASCAR onslaught can be traced back to 2007. Back then, NASCAR had just updated its stock car model to the “Car of Tomorrow” following safety concerns brought out by the previous car. Winning the CoT’s debut race, Kyle Busch had openly claimed that the CoT car “sucks.”

Known as one of NASCAR’s loudest critics, Busch broke character in a shocking turn of events at Chicago’s street circuit.

As part of its 75th anniversary, NASCAR has added a street circuit to its calendar for the first time. Unhappy with the decision, the Richard Childress Racing driver had earlier expressed that the Next Gen cars weren’t up to the challenge of the street circuit. Kyle Busch feared the sharp corners of the Chicago Street Course would end up “killing” the cars. However, his recent comments have surprised the motorsport world. Following the 50-minute practice session at Chicago’s street circuit, Busch spoke to Frontstretch’s media personnel.

Uncharacteristically putting down his critic hat, Kyle Busch complimented NASCAR’s Next Gen car capability at the street circuit. Breaking character for a whole 29 seconds, Busch said, “It feels okay. It feels like normal. Feels like what you’d expect. Honestly, it’s better served for this type of environment than the old car. You saw a lot of guys wheel hopping and having issues with the Xfinity cars, which are truck-arm cars, and that doesn’t lend itself to very good braking opportunities, getting deep into corners and not wheel hopping.”

Further adding how easy it was to maneuver the Next Gen car at the narrow street circuit, Busch said, “So this car here, you just kind of slide a tire here or there you know, your front if you’re too much front bias or a rear if you’re too much rear-biased, but it doesn’t wheel hop and crash it. You just kind of slide a little bit and then you got to get it back under control.”

Surprising, to say the least, Kyle Busch’s uncharacteristic appreciation of the Next Gen car is in stark contrast to his recent criticism of NASCAR’s street circuit choice.

Last week, the NASCAR community witnessed a spike in concerns regarding the street circuit’s addition to NASCAR’s calendar. At the forefront of those who voiced their opinions was Kyle Busch. Having experienced the street circuit on NASCAR’s iRacing simulators, Busch lashed out at the decision to race on Chicago’s unfavorable streets.

Voicing his concerns, Busch laid out the challenges and flaws of the temporary street circuit. “It’s really rough. It’s bumpy. It’s slippery. There’s some corners that are very challenging.. some blind ones at that…You’re barely trying to miss getting your right front ripped off; not bouncing off that and killing your car on the left side”, said Busch.
