The NASCAR community is abuzz with anticipation for the forthcoming race at the North Wilkesboro. The famed track has been resurrected and restored to racing standards, sparking joy among fans and drivers and the general NASCAR community alike. However, after the $20 million renovation project, they decided not to change the original asphalt.

Nonetheless, the All-Star race scheduled for the following weekend has been a topic of significant interest. Even more so after Austin Dillon, recently had the chance to put the vintage track’s asphalt to the test, ahead of the big race. His less-than-optimistic findings about tire wear have sparked unease among the drivers, with concerns now reverberating across the racing fraternity.

Kyle Busch showcases his displeasure with the upcoming North Wilkesboro event

Talking about Dillon’s feedback, Kyle Busch replied, “Yeah, I think it’s going to be interesting, for sure. The tire falloff at that race track is by far the worst I think we’ll ever see.”

“So 50 or 60 lap runs on tires that you have to go–I mean that’s a long time anyways, but it’s not quite 100 laps like late model races or modified races that are going to run there next week.”

He added, “Still, I think you’re going to have to figure out how hard to push. If you’re a guy upfront, do you push for a little while? If you’re a guy in the back, how much do you ride? Is the field going to catch up and are you going to go a lap down? Things of that nature.”

What had Austin Dillon said about the track?

Just around a month ago, Austin Dillon along with a few other drivers had the opportunity to test some of Goodyear’s tire compounds at the vintage track. Following their test runs, Dillon shared his findings with the press, concerning the tires’ performance and degradation.

He stressed the importance of finding the nuances therein that could potentially offer a competitive edge. However, he emphasized that the strategy for this venue was pretty straightforward – maintaining the car at the bottom of the track and taking meticulous care of the tires. Adding, “It’s challenging. It’s got a lot of character to it… It’s rough and gritty. You gotta try and take care of your tires.”

As we look forward to the upcoming race, Dillon’s remarks on tire preservation undoubtedly set the stage for a strategic showdown. Just as Busch stated, the real challenge for the drivers, however, lies in striking the perfect balance – knowing when to unleash their aggressive side and when to exercise restraint for tire conservation. It’s this delicate equilibrium that will determine the outcome, promising a thrilling spectacle for all NASCAR enthusiasts.
