When the Cup Series race at the Texas Motor Speedway finally concluded, Kyle Busch emerged victorious. With this, he ended a massive dry spell that threatened to make him the 3rd defending champion to go winless in the following year. However, while he dodged one record, he took a step towards another record.

In light of the win, older brother Kurt Busch spoke about the race. He joked that the ‘wrong Busch’ won, though he was glad that Kyle finally broke the jinx. After several races where he fell agonizingly short, it was good to see the #18 driver return to the top step once again.

In the process, Kyle Busch has now gone 16 years with at least one win in consecutive seasons. As a result, Busch has tied with Ricky Rudd, Jimmie Johnson, and Rusty Wallace for wins in consecutive seasons. If he wants to hold the record, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver needs to record wins in the next three seasons.

How does the Kyle Busch win affect brother Kurt?

While the win changes nothing in the Playoff standings, since Kyle is already eliminated, it does put pressure on Kurt. The older Busch finished the Texas race in 7th place, which makes things difficult for him. Now, the whole paddock heads to Martinsville for the final race before the season finale. This is Kurt Busch’s last chance to secure his slot in the Championship 4.

Already, Joey Logano has secured his slot with his win at Kansas, while Kyle Busch’s win does nothing to affect the playoff race. Meanwhile, this win is a matter of personal pride for Busch, as he is the defending champion. To not see the defending champion take a win in the following year, is a ludicrous notion.

However, when the Cup Series drivers head to Martinsville this weekend, it could be no holds barred. The seven remaining drivers will be scrambling to try and win at Martinsville, or score enough points to qualify. So, while Kurt will be happy for Kyle, for now, he could be cursing him this weekend.
