True NASCAR fans will agree that the Bowman Gray Stadium isn’t just another racetrack. It is, in fact, the very cornerstone of stock car racing. It’s a legendary battleground where tempers flare, rivalries ignite, and legends are made. Since 1949, this North Carolina short track, nicknamed “The Madhouse,” for its action on and off the track, has been the heart of grassroots racing. The venue has produced some of the most aggressive, door-banging action in motorsports.

Now, after being 54 years away from the NASCAR national stage, the Mecca of stock racing has returned! And it has brought with it a whole new set of challenges for today’s drivers, including Cup Series rookie Shane van Gisbergen (SVG). The New Zealand native, new to the NASCAR world, found himself experiencing not only the track’s chaos but also its unique, passionate fan base.

The Bowman Gray has an atmosphere that blurs the line between a Saturday night showdown and a high-octane party. The proximity between the track and the fans creates an intensity few venues can match. And Shane van Gisbergen got a front-row seat to it all. “Those driver intros were epic. Just the atmosphere and pretty intimate with the crowd, like, there’s some interesting specimens in the crowd I’d say” he said in a post-race interview.

SVG further described the crowd as ‘intimate’ and ‘awesome.’ But, it was the fans’ sheer enthusiasm and passion that truly caught his attention. He recalled spotting a shirtless supporter passionately cheering for Christopher Bell. “There was a dude with no shirt on with ‘20’ written on him. And he must have been freezing. Yea. But, every lap he was cheering Christopher.” he said, nodding to the ‘interesting specimens’ he mentioned earlier.

In the end, Shane van Gisbergen acknowledged the warmth and excitement of the Bowman Gray faithful. With his signature laid-back attitude, he exclaimed that this kind of grassroots racing atmosphere is what makes NASCAR so special. He even went on to compare the atmosphere at the Bowman Gray with the energy of racing at the Western Springs in his home country.

“It’s kinda like Western Springs where I spent summer racing, you know, the crowd feels like they’re on top of you. They’re really into it. It’s awesome,” he added. For SVG, Bowman Gray wasn’t just another racetrack on the NASCAR calendar. It was an unforgettable experience that showcased the raw, unfiltered spirit of stock car racing in its purest form.

What’s next for SVG at the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series?

The 2025 NASCAR Cup series will be the first full season for Shane van Gisbergen as he gears up to drive the #88 for Trackhouse Racing. He has said that he won’t be setting any goals for the season and rather stay true to the mindset that’s worked for him in Supercars. The three-time Supercars champion told Fox Sports, “I don’t go racing with goals… just doing my best every week and just have the same approach every week.”

Shane van Gisbergen is confident in his ability to perform. “I know I can do the job… It’s just time. I know I can get there. It’s just how long it’s going to take on the oval side.” he stated. The statement reflects Shane van Gisbergen’s measured yet optimistic mindset as he prepares for the challenges of a full NASCAR Cup Series season.

He has shown everyone that he can win on road courses, as he did in his debut race at Chicago Street in 2023. But his performances on intermediate oval tracks have a lot to be desired. With an abysmal average finish of 27 at Intermediates and 32.0 at Superspeedways (in the Cup Series), Shane van Gisbergen will look to put his best foot forward in preparation for Daytona coming up. “It’s going to be epic,” said SVG when asked about taking on the Daytona 500 for the first time.

The road course ringer will have to prove his mettle on tracks that he is not used to, to truly stamp his authority in the Cup Series. What are your expectations from SVG in 2025?
