After racing in the NASCAR Cup Series for more than two decades, it’s finally time for Kevin Harvick to prepare for his last ever season. It was announced earlier this week that Harvick would wrap his illustrious career up at the end of the 2023 season. With the retirement plans being made official, Harvick’s crew chief seems to be getting a little emotional about the news. In a recent interview with a reputed radio station, Harvick’s crew chief illustrated the silver lining behind his driver’s retirement announcement.

During the interview, Crew Chief Rodney Childers said, “When you start seeing those videos and those pictures of the things that we’ve done together. And you know, it’s just something that you don’t you know, ever happen in your lifetime. And it’s probably never going to happen again.”

“The relationship that we have and the team that we have and everything, that this #4 team is about is just, you know, it’s tough, and you know, on the other side of it, I’m glad that part’s behind us and we can focus on racing and going forward and winning races this year. It’s going to be an interesting year.”

The atmosphere might be slightly gloomy at the #4 team of Stewart-Haas Racing. It surely would be so for Rodney Childers. The crew chief has worked day and night to get the #4 four team up and running. It will come to an end this year. But for one last season, the power duo of Harvick and Childers will take the charge into the field.

In the same interview, Childers was asked if it was better that Harvick had announced the news before the start of the season as opposed to revealing it near the end of the season. The crew chief, who seemed slightly emotional, said that because people now know for certain that Harvick is retiring, more eyes will be focused on him and he will be praised even more by the media and fans.

He added that Harvick deserves all the praise he gets and more. He further mentioned that Harvick does not care much about what is said in the media at races every week. This sounds exactly like a classic Harvick reaction. As for fans, it is time to enjoy the races and prepare to see the iconic driver grace the field for the last time at Phoenix later this year.
