Can Tony Stewart be considered a ‘Jack of All Trade’? One may find the question ambiguous and disparaging in nature, but is there anything in the racing world that the Hall of Famer cannot do? With a successful run in the Cup Series, both as a driver and as a team owner, and in other various motor racing series, Tony Stewart has created an invincible league of his own.

However, are the various experimentations and forays into the motor racing world proving to be detrimental for the former Cup Series champion and the brunt being suffered by his NASCAR team, Stewart-Haas Racing? Well, the answer seems to be yes, especially after the recent interview of Kevin Harvick with the Athletic after sustaining the biggest blow in his racing career.

With over two decades of being a Cup Series driver, Kevin Harvick has been an indispensable part of the NASCAR community. After being chosen as a substitute for Dale Earnhardt, the driver eventually climbed to fame. However, coming to the twilight zone in his racing career in the 2023 season, the No. 4 driver had just one last shot at winning his second Cup Series championship, but everything fell into crumbles as the struggles with the Ford reached a tipping point in Bristol.

Moreover, Harvick was the only Stewart-Haas Racing driver who had qualified for the playoffs and had the potential to score another victory. On the contrary, the driver fell down in laps, failed to find momentum on the Bristol track, and eventually was eliminated from the Round of 12.

Nonetheless, Harvick, in his long journey, has amassed not only fans but also sound judgment. Through his clever acumen, the retiring driver has been able to thrive so long in the sport. As a result, Kevin believes that it is ‘leadership’ that helped him sustain himself in the sport.

In his interview with the Athletic, when asked the host, “What is the single most important skill a race car driver can possess?”

To this, the driver retorted, “Leadership. So many people look at this as, “Hey, he’s a good driver,” or, “He’s fast,” but in the end, that isn’t really what gets you what you want. You have to be able to communicate and be part of the process of how you get to where you want to be. Whether it’s setups or helping with the conversations in the team, everything you do is about being a good leader and being a part of that process in order to make things better.”

“There’s so much more that goes into it than just saying, ‘Hey, we have a fast car and I can drive it.’ There are years that go like that, right? Those are the easy years. The hard years are when you have to work through things, and it’s keeping that dip from being as low as where everybody else would go that’s not involved in the process.”

This response from Kevin Harvick comes just days after his team boss, Tony Stewart, clinched another trophy in the NHRA Series to take the point lead.

In his first season as an NHRA driver, Stewart defeated Madison Payne at Maple Grove, only to take the lead in the points table. He defeated her with a time of 5.213 seconds.

Stewart also posted on Twitter with the caption, “Won at @maplegrove1320 and took over the Top Alcohol championship points lead! Happy to get the win for my McPhillips Racing crew at their home track.”

While the list of trophies seems to increase for the driver on his personal front, his Cup Series team is far from notching a victory, and Harvick’s departure from the race marked the final blow. Nonetheless, it is to be seen if Josh Berry is able to feel the void in the team.
