Driving a stock car at 200 miles per hour can be intense. Sometimes too intense. With a NASCAR Cup Series race going on for anywhere between two to four hours, it’s not surprising that the most common question drivers are often asked is, “What happens if you need to use the bathroom during the race?” Naturally, drivers cannot simply walk out of their cars, go for a much-needed bathroom break, and resume their race. Which means they do what needs to be done, and let it go.

When asked if Kevin Harvick has been in a similar situation, the 48-year-old straight-away denied it, while ‘leaking’ some secrets about other drivers.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way

At least that’s what Kevin Harvick believes when it comes to not urinating in the car during races. A claim that Denny Hamlin might disagree with, having admitted to wetting his pants in Atlanta earlier this year. Describing it as “historical“, given the fact that it’s an incident that occurred for the first time in his two-decade-old career, Hamlin also revealed that motorsport legend Carl Edwards and 23XI driver Tyler Reddick have been guilty of the same.

This topic was brought up in a conversation on Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour podcast after a tweet by ‘Nascarasm’ assumingly said, “Out of habit he may just pee in the seat. Be careful”. The remark referred to a picture of Kevin Harvick posted by her wife DeLana Harvick, where he was sitting beside a wine glass. When asked if he had seen the tweet and ever done the business during a race, Kevin Harvick replied, “I did not (see the tweet). I have never been able to pee in the seat. I could never do it. I have never ever once peed on myself. I know all of them, they for the most part, pretty much, there’s a lot of guys that just let it go.”

While we have to take his word for it, Harvick did ‘leak’ some untold secrets of other drivers. He said, “There’s a kid that races Legends cars, his brother is an open-wheel racer and just lets it rip. Just lets it go. He’s like ‘I thought I was supposed to do that’. Back in the day, Robby Gordon used to wear a catheter and it had a hose that would go out of the suit and into the hole in the floorboard and out the bottom of the car.”

Peeing inside your car during a race is, however, a rare occurrence for most. Drivers have to bear high temperatures, because of which they end up sweating profusely- leaving little need to use the bathroom. Yet, on days such urges befall a driver, urination isn’t the only ‘problem’ they have to face.

Back in 2004, Tony Stewart started the race at Watkins Glen in fourth place. While battling it out with Jeff Gordon 20 laps in, he began to experience stomach cramps and was looking for a relief driver. With Boris on standby, Stewart took the lead and told his team to make a change, even if it was for a short period.

However, a few laps later, Stewart miraculously felt better and reported to his team that there was no need for a relief driver. You can only imagine what went down. He went on to win the race that day, but instead of celebrating the win, Stewart rushed out of victory lane and into his motorcoach, for what could only be a wardrobe change.

The incident was discussed by Bubba Wallace with comedian Kevin Hart, who asked the driver, “Have you ever seen a driver get out with sh*t in his suit?” Wallace replied, “I’ve heard about it, never seen it. He won the race. Tony Stewart!” The revelation prompted Kevin Hart to nickname the driver “Tony Dingleberry Stewart” on Laugh Out Loud Network.

The incident proves that nature waits for nobody, and it shouldn’t come between a driver and his race. Can you think of other drivers who have relieved themselves during a NASCAR race? Let us know in the comments!
