How early is too early, or can there be any designated age for learning? Well, for contemporary NASCAR drivers, it can be as early as the age of 5. Some may be taken aback by seeing the age, but that’s how cutthroat the world of motorsports, or NASCAR to be specific, has become. It is nothing less than the survival of the fittest.

However, can the notion of starting out early have a detrimental effect on the budding racer, or does it act as a cushion against the late bloomers? Drawing from similar lines, this seems to be the new normal, as Chris Rice’s star driver seems to assert these facts in the latest episode of Dale Jr. Download as he throws shade at Kevin Harvick’s protege.

Budding drivers like Brexton Busch, Owen Larson, and Keelan Harvick have grown up more on the tracks of NASCAR than they have in their homes. They are more knowledgeable about racing technicalities than they are about learning the alphabet system. Witnessing their fathers compete in the elite series of NASCAR and notching championships, these young budding racers also harbor the aspirations of following the same suit and have already embarked on the strenuous road of motorsport racing.

Kevin Harvick’s 10-year-old son, Keelan Harvick, who aspires to be a Formula 1 driver, not only contends on American soil but also in kart racing all over the world. Keelan also made his debut in X30 Junior and earned a position of P5. However, being exposed to the world of motorsports at an early age adds to the learning process or will prove to be detrimental in nature. Along the same lines, Junior commented on Kaulig Racing‘s departing star Justin Haley: It is just the new normal, but for veteran Dale Earnhardt Jr., it is a bit too early.

Appearing on the episode of Dale Jr Download, Haley, who is 24 himself revealed, I think I was nine” when he started racing. He added, “Late start. It was a quarter midget that we spray-painted it black and went racing.”

To this Dale Jr questioned, “Late really?” However, Haley replied, “I mean 9 is late right?” As a reply, Junior added, “I don’t think so. I didn’t start driving till I was 15.” Haley in a jest added, “That was way late.”

The Kaulig Racing driver also added,The new normal is 9. I mean look at Keelan Harvick. That’s normal now.” Nevertheless, both drivers accepted that they were unable to decipher the information that was fed to them. Junior disclosed, “Man when I started racing go-kart races when I was 12, no idea what it was.” Haley retorted, “I still don’t know if I have any idea what is going on. I am like- ‘Man, I don’t know,’ I mean I was at a full-size stock car at 12.”

The debate of starting out early in a career and getting a foothold in the tracks of motorsports does add to the experience of these prodigies. Moreover, the judgment that was laid forward by Haley and Junior revives Tony Stewart’s dichotomy of ‘merit and maturity.’

During his press conference announcing the signing of Josh Berry, Tony Stewart stated, “I am not interested in some kid’s father coming and buying their way into the Cup series. I have zero interest in that.”

“We want guys that earn their way, that work hard, that understand the values that it takes to be a top-tier driver – not one that just got his high school diploma and now all the sudden he’s a Cup driver.”
