Remember when AJ Allmendinger dominated the inaugural Indianapolis Motor Speed Way Road Course and cemented his name into the unofficial ‘road course Hall of Fame’? Only a few years later, Allmendinger has quickly gained popularity for being exceptional at road courses. This was only further solidified by his win at the Charlotte Roval earlier this season. But to say that Kaulig Racing has one road course maestro among their ranks, would not be right.

With the addition of Shane van Gisbergen, Kaulig Racing [in association with Trackhouse Racing] is keen on dominating the upcoming road courses, which begs the question. Does the team have two of the best road course drivers in the Xfinity Series on their side?

Kicking things off with AJ Allmendinger’s heroics on road courses, not only did he fend off William Byron for a heart-stopping win at the Charlotte Roval this year, but also managed to qualify on pole at the infamous Indy Road Course in Xfinity. If we take things back a notch further to 2022, Allmendinger had a year filled with road course domination.

While he may have run there for a couple of races in 2023, his decision to run in Kaulig and Trackhouse’s Xfinity program could pay dividends. With such natural confidence in the road courses which are becoming plenty as the years pass, Allmendinger is a lethal weapon for his team in utilizing the maximum potential.

But it isn’t just the Xfinity Series that will see AJ Allmendinger’s heroics! Kaulig and Allmendinger will also join forces for the Daytona 500 at the Cup Series season opener, and they have a big possibility of taking it home. And when Shane van Gisbergen was asked about his opinion on his new teammate by Nick DeGroot from motorsport.com, the Kiwi wasted no time to share:

“I haven’t known him properly yet but hopefully he’s open with it and open to giving me advice and you know, he’s a super strong benchmark as a teammate to you know not to compare myself against but to learn off, and yeah I’m excited wearing some good equipment, going up to Kaulig yesterday and meeting around there and seeing all the Chevys lined up, it was pretty impressive.”

Van Gisbergen also shared that he was beyond excited to drive for Trackhouse and Kaulig, and his partnership with AJ Allmendinger will be a valuable source of knowledge for the budding ‘rookie’.

It’s safe to say when a teammate has such high praises to sing about his performances, AJ Allmendinger is undoubtedly one of the best road course experts on the current grid and could very well be a serious advantage for Kaulig Racing. But the team bosses know Van Gisbergen is no slouch either!

It’s no secret that Shane van Gisbergen has been the talk of the town after he was announced as Trackhouse’s Xfinity entry. But what many don’t know is that Gisbergen had been struggling with the new generation of Australian V8 Supercars. He also openly critiqued the series’ decisions, ultimately leaving things sour. However, when he won in Chicago in only his first-ever NASCAR race, we knew he was here to stay.

The case was fairly similar for Trackhouse co-owner Justin Marks, who shared in a press release, “We know Shane will be incredibly competitive at the road course events in both the NASCAR Cup and Xfinity series, but we wanted to get him as much experience on NASCAR ovals as possible, so I am really excited about his 2024 schedule,” While Van Gisbergen may lack experience on NASCAR ovals, his expertise on road courses due to his Australian Supercar origins means he could potentially match Allmendinger’s road course performances, if not outright beat them

Marks also added how Kaulig Racing has had a long history of winning Xfinity Series races and shared his gratitude toward Matt Kaulig and Chris Rice for seeing the potential in Shane van Gisbergen.

While Shan Van Gisbergen got his wish to compete in America’s greatest motorsport series, his teammate will be right there with him on each corner. While the road course maestros will be the ones to watch out for at the Charlotte Roval and other such circuits, only time will tell if Trackhouse Racing and Kaulig Racing’s gamble has paid off.
