Kasey Kahne’s return to NASCAR this season has been a journey that feels both fresh and nostalgic. The 16-year veteran, who had stepped away from the sport due to health concerns, is making a surprise return to the track with an unexpected choice of venue: Rockingham Speedway. The decision wasn’t random; it was a place that holds a deep personal connection for Kahne.
Kahne’s time at Rockingham has added an extra layer of sentiment to his return. Reflecting on that pivotal moment, Kahne recalled, “First time I ever tested a stock car, it was here. I had won a sprint car race in Volusia, but the night before it was a Sunday night race in Volusia County! I drove through the night, up here, slept in a parking lot, and then got into a Busch Series car that morning and did a test here.” It was at Rockingham where he got behind the wheel of a stock car for the very first time, with the test giving him some of his first minutes in the Xfinity Series. It sparked off a relatively successful career in the Cup Series with 18 wins, all thanks to that test in Rockingham.
Despite the physical and mental demands of the sport, Kahne emphasized that the excitement of returning to a familiar setting was something special. “From that point on, I just always really enjoyed this place,” he explained. “When you put basically your whole life into racing and NASCAR for that many years leading up to it, and then take a little time off and come back, it still feels pretty familiar.”
For Kahne, who spent over a decade-and-a-half racing in NASCAR’s top tier, Rockingham represents more than just a race track; it is a place where his NASCAR career began. He has also won a Craftsman Truck Series race here back in 2012. The connection to the track is both professional and emotional, providing a fitting backdrop for his return to a sport he’s given so much of his life to.
His decision to come back to Rockingham makes him seem human to find comfort in the familiar. Now, as he prepares to turn over new page in his NASCAR story, Kahne is ready to show that he still holds the passion and skills of his rookie self.

Hendrick Motorsports (HMS), a name synonymous with power and excellence in NASCAR, has become a force to be reckoned with. The good news for fans is they can bid on a slice of that heritage when HMS hosts a special grand auction in partnership with Iron Horse Auction Co. Inc. Raced-used chassis, bodywork, and other memorabilia from some of the sport’s most iconic drivers will be part of the highly anticipated event.
Among the standout items is Kasey Kahne‘s 2015 Chassis #923, which he drove to take three top-5 finishes and ten top-10 finishes that year. Kahne‘s career and a place on NASCAR‘s 75 Greatest Drivers list, makes this chassis a collector’s must-have. And even though it has historic significance, it can be claimed for less than $1,000. In addition to Kahne’s chassis, Jimmie Johnson’s Chassis #659 from the rich history of the 2011 NASCAR season will be up for grabs. Another tempting item for the fans is Jeff Gordon’s Gen 6 Chassis #878, which Chase Elliott drove in 2017-2018.
The race at Rockingham Speedway, a venue with special memories for Kahne, marks a significant milestone, as it’s the track’s first NASCAR race since 2013. Kahne will join test runs on January 28 in preparation for the Xfinity Series race on April 19. With the full support of Hendrick Automotive Group, Kahne aims to make this return a memorable one.
