Towards the end of last season, you would have been forgiven for thinking that Daniel Suarez’s Cup Series run with Trackhouse Racing was coming to an end. However, after the Mexican-born driver defied all the odds and won a thriller in Atlanta, the narrative changed completely. Or did it? Team owner Justin Marks recently said they never had any plans to ask Suarez, and that has some insiders scratching their heads.

The driver of the #99 car perhaps had one of the worst seasons in his entire career of motor racing. He failed to win a single race and did not have enough points to make it into the playoffs. However, things are different this season as Daniel Suarez has already made it into the last 16 with his win in Atlanta, rejuvenating his Cup Series run.

In a recent video released by GoPRNLive, veteran motorsports journalists Deb Williams and Bruce Martin spoke about Marks’ faith in the former Xfinity Series champion and how everyone might have made a big deal out of nothing in the off-season. 2024 is the final year of the 32-year-old’s contract, but he seems to have secured his future for the time being.

“Let’s talk about Daniel Suarez because I think during the offseason we talked a lot about which driver started the year on the hot seat and Daniel Suarez’s name is one that kept coming up. He had a winless year last while Ross Chastain was still winning races, running better but he started this year with a new determination. Justin Marks has said they got him a new chief…and he said, we want to give Daniel every opportunity to be successful. 2 races into the season, he is in Victory Lane. So I would imagine the monkey on his back is now gone,” Martin said.

Another reason why fans believed that Suarez was in the hot seat is Trackhouse Racing’s signings. The team signed Zane Smith before the season began as a full-timer and, thanks to their agreement with Kaulig Racing, they will acquire the services of Shane Van Gisbergen in the Cup. Deb Williams touched on this aspect as she explained how fans blew things out of proportion.

“I can’t believe that maybe some of us were making more out of it than what it really was, even though this is a contract year for Daniel and with them signing Zane Smith and him running out of the Spire Motorsports stable and with the deal that Trackhouse has with Kaulig Racing and Shane Van Gisbergen, you would naturally think that Daniel is on the hot seat but I think the fact that Justin is a driver and he understands the development situation, he understands the talent that’s there, I kind of wonder if maybe we weren’t making out the hot seat a little hotter for Daniel than what it really was,” she opined.

Justin Marks’ faith in the driver of the #99 did not come as a surprise after his win in Atlanta. The fact that he said that there was no future for Trackhouse Racing without Suarez. But as far as Bruce Martin is considered, Marks has had it all planned out for quite a while now.

The Trackhouse Racing team is not an old team in the Cup Series. It was founded in 2020, but in this short time they have picked up multiple race wins in the competition. Clearly, Marks knows what he is doing, and with the Zane Smith and SVG signings. The plan has always included Daniel Suarez.

“What amazes me about Justin Marks is that he is 2 laps ahead of the rest of us when it comes to what he perceives he’s doing with his team because as he pointed out so often Sunday night was there’s a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes business-wise that you guys don’t know about. He’s already envisioned what he’s going to do with the team,” Martin added.

The growth of Trackhouse Racing has been intriguing to see, and it is only a matter of time before they challenge the big boys more consistently for race and championship wins. How many wins do you think the team will have this season?
