Trackhouse Racing is far from your ordinary NASCAR Cup Series team. Set out to disrupt the current power dynamics of the Cup Series, the team opted for drivers like Daniel Suarez and watermelon farmer Ross Chastain. Looking back at their short but successful history, they’ve grown to be a formidable force in NASCAR.
However, team owner Justin Marks’ ambitious plans for his Trackhouse vision aren’t just restricted to the ovals of NASCAR. Well, this was pretty much clear when Marks took his team international and entered the world of MotoGP. Making a switch from four to two wheels and expanding Tackhouse’s footprint was indeed huge. Despite juggling the two behemoths of auto racing series as a team owner, it seems like his expansion project is far from complete.

NASCAR has a rich history of drivers making a crossover with IndyCar. The historic double has seen many drivers have a go at completing 1100 miles of racing on a single day. 500 miles in the open-wheel car at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and then returning to Charlotte for the Coca-Cola 600. Kyle Larson from Hendrick Motorsports made his Indy 500 debut in 2024. Well, this is something Marks has his eyes on as he wants his auto racing brand to be represented at the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing.”
Speaking to NBC Sports about his plans to expand to open-wheel racing, especially the Indy 500, Marks said, “It’s certainly a dream of mine to have Trackhouse represented in that race. There are continuing discussions. It’s no small feat. It’s something that we’ve looked at as a company for a number of years. I think when the time is right, we’ll take a real hard look at it. I don’t think that the Trackhouse story will ever be complete without us competing in the world’s greatest open-wheel race.”
Given how Project 91 has allowed the team to partner with international drivers like Kimi Raikkonen, Shane van Gisbergen, and Helio Castroneves, this dream project isn’t out of bounds. However, even an established team like Hendrick Motorsports had to plan out a roadmap with Arrow-McLaren for Kyle Larson. Despite that, they ran into trouble, especially with Larson missing the start of the Coca-Cola 600 and the waiver drama that followed. So, Marks also understands the challenges that come with attempting this ambitious project.
Trackhouse Racing has now expanded to a three-car team. SVG will be piloting their third full-time entry in 2025. Moreover, Project 91 is also back with 4-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves attempting to qualify for the Daytona 500. Despite the promise and success of Project 91, Marks considers this a road course project, allowing non-NASCAR drivers an opportunity to shine in NASCAR.

The Project 91 car is better suited for road course NASCAR events

Justin Marks wants Project 91 to be a success for those drivers who collaborate with them. Now that they have expanded to a three-car team, the #91 race car would see more open entries like Castroneves in the future. After all, competing against the best on the ovals isn’t likely to give them success. Moreover, Marks wants the drivers linked to Project 91 to play to their strengths; we saw that with SVG in how his win in the Chicago Street Race helped him climb ranks.
“If you’re looking at Formula One drivers or World Endurance Championship drivers, wherever else they might come from, we really want to put these guys in positions to be successful. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to take someone who’s never been in a stock car before, never been on an oval before, and take them to Dover, Bristol, or Darlington or something like that. We want to be successful with the car. I would say primarily it is a road course program.” Marks added.

But to see the Brazilian driver in the #91 car for the Daytona 500 is something of a special project. Castroneves has proven his prowess winning the Rolex 24 at Daytona and has 16 IROC starts under his belt. There’s a possibility that he could return for more Cup races at tracks like COTA, Sonoma, or Watkins Glen.
