The 2024 NASCAR Cup Series schedule has become a massive point of discussion among fans, insiders, and drivers. There are several big changes to the 2024 calendar and not everyone is happy about it. The biggest point of contention is Daytona not hosting the final regular-season race of the season. There is also the grand entry of Iowa into the schedule. While that looks good on paper, some people believe that it is nothing but a publicity stunt on NASCAR’s part before they discard the venue.
NASCAR has owned the Iowa Speedway since 2013 and some people find it surprising that they have chosen it as a Cup Series venue after so long. There is no certainty about the track’s future beyond the 2024 season either. Will Cup racing continue over there or is it just a stand-in? That is exactly what eminent NASCAR journalist Bob Pockrass recently touched upon.

On the latest episode of the Door Bumper Clear podcast, Bob Pockrass said what a lot of NASCAR fans had been saying. Ever since the schedule came out, Daytona and Iowa have been two points of debate among anyone close to the sport. The Cup Series will race at the Iowa Speedway for the first time in its history.
While a lot of people, including Kyle Busch, believe it to be a good idea, some people are left unconvinced. This includes Bob Pockrass, who believes that the Iowa race could just be a stand-in before NASCAR finds a more suitable venue in Mexico or Canada as early as 2025. That would be heartbreaking for NASCAR fans in Iowa who had been waiting their whole lives for their city to be a permanent venue.
“If you’re gonna go to Iowa, I think you need to go there and say hey we’re going to go there for three years or four years, and not leave it like well is it just a holder place for Montreal or not? You know, they’re like well it’s, you know, it’s great, fans have been clamoring for it, this is the right time, well, I mean NASCAR’s owned it since 10 years so why wasn’t 10 years ago the right time? Or 9 years ago or 8 years ago?” Pockrass said.
“I’ve never been there, so I’m looking forward to going. I would just hate to go there once and then say okay well, now we got Montreal or somewhere in Mexico got their national race and they’re gonna leave it. If it’s just a 1-year plan I would say go to Homestead for a second race instead of maybe lifting people’s hopes up,” the eminent NASCAR journalist added.
No matter what NASCAR has planned with the Iowa Speedway, one can be certain the event will be a success. Fans will come out in droves to watch Cup racing and former Cup Series champion Kyle Busch is looking forward to racing at the track.

In an interview after the Charlotte Roval race, Rowdy was asked about the 2024 schedule. The Richard Childress Racing driver already has experience with the Iowa track and its crowd. His son, Brexton Busch, has raced numerous times at the track before. Kyle Busch said that he liked Iowa’s inclusion and believes that fans will turn up and make it a successful weekend.
“I mean I like the Iowa piece. We race a bunch out there with Brexton’s stuff so the midwestern people, they’re gonna show up and it’s gonna be a good race so excited about that,” he said.

But if the Iowa Speedway is discarded after just one season, it would indeed be a very bad look on NASCAR. A lot of the drivers, perhaps including Kyle Busch, would be disappointed with the organizers. It really would be a shame, especially for motor racing fans based out of Iowa.
